    license plates FYI

Well I just received the plates for the 2010 450. New to me personally but not new to hearing about this experience. There is the second rating stickers your sent by DMV. I read about where DMV sends a second little flourescent sticker to affix to your truck which in my case has a 30 on it.

My understanding is that it is the rating of my truck, when I licensed it at 30K. One may ask why 30K when it is capable of 33K and then if I want to pull over... more. Well, the price tag is almost 700.00 more for a 30-40K rating. It is actually on my paper license as well. Besides that my Sig Series Reese gooseneck is rated at 30K. The more I hear from some of my Chippy pards, you get pulled over hauling more that what your licensed for, your gonna get fined big. It would be easy money for the state for you to be that blatantly wrong. They don't care! They will not play around with your ignorant behind. And as I have said, which they stand on, ignorance is no excuse especially if your pulling something that weighs over 30K.

The 30 should be stuck to the truck maybe on the bottom of doors. Well, thats out, I am just not doing it! Sure, somebody may say something but until then, they stay on the inside. I did read as a recreational vehicle I am not regulated to stop at scales as a commercial vehicle. Anyway, I have them and will look at placing them on the inside of the door on a flat spot big enough to stick them on. a small technicality or if nothing else, semantics.( I got that info somewhere here as well to keep from uglying up your ride.) My use for this is non commercial anyway, so I do not have to stop at weigh stations pulling a fiver.

On the sticker is a place for the yearly month and date. Very similair to what exists on the plate. Same color and all. This will not be news to some here but it will be new to others and to ask all the questions you can now will only help as the more you know the better off your going to be. So that is what I learned and that is what I want to share.
    good luck.

I think as long as you have a "pick-up bed" then you don't have to stop at scales. It's still considered an auto.

As long as the scales have a sign out front that says "No Pickups" and some of the other states have electronic signs out there that tell you if they want you to pull in. Been there done that

My understanding is that if the vehicle's unladen weight exceeds 8,000 lbs it is no longer considered a "pickup". We ran into this issue with several of the F650's we were building and putting pickup beds on them. The F450 "pickup" is looked at just like an F450 chassis cab at the DMV. Technically, you should have stickers on the side that state "Not For Hire".

The only real reason for stopping at the scales is IF you are being compensated for the load you are carrying or towing. If you are using the vehicle for business, regardless if it's a Ranger or F750, you are mandated to go through the scales and get weight, along with carrying a log book and so on.

If you have a handicapped placard and the unladen weight is 8501 lbs or less you can apply for handicapped plates and the weight fees will be dropped.I just did this and saved $257.00 for the year. A nice chunk of change in my opinion. You can only do this to one vehicle in your name. The unladen weight on my 2005 FX4 F250 CC LB is 7020 lbs. You will still have a commercial registration document and I think you can still park in loading zones with this, but I don't know that for a fact. You have to turn in your commercial plates when you pick up the handicapped plates.

So, now you are paying for just the registration and license fees.

Hope this helps someone. Pick up the form from DMV or download if from the internet.

I would bet my F250 is close to if not over 8000 with the hitch in the bed and all the aftermarket crap on it. I will have to take it to a scale one of these days.

Just go to the local dump, pull on the scale, and ask them. Thats what I did. 05 F250 CC/SB 4X4 PSD 35's, 400lb. toolbox, small honda generator, 1/2 tank, and a bedliner came to 4.25 tons or 8500lbs.

Yup, sounds about what I would expect with rize traction bars (toads x 2) sliding 5ver hitch, four-link front end with oversize coils, airbags, 35's I'm thinking around 8200.

DMV uses the unladen weight ratiing on the Calif state registration that you should have in your glove compartment. Just take that in and show it to them when you apply for the handicapped plates. Thats what I did. Worked like a charm. In and out in 5 minutes with handicapped plates in hand. Remember to take your commercial plates in with you so you can trade for handicapped plates They must have the old plates before you can get the handicapped plates.
Good trade i would say. No extra charge.

I thought that was only if you had a shell or bedcap and declared the the vehilce non commercial. Are handycap plates considered non-comm. or are they just considered handycap but still commercial?

Only the pinbox and hitch plate are in the bed. The rest of the weight is on the 4 tires of the trailer. I also would like to see any pictures of 12,000 lbs in the bed of the truck, just not in my truck, thank you. Total weight of trailer is 12,000 lbs gvwr
