    Ford Dealer and Transmission

Ok, so here is the deal. Ford Dealer overfilled my trans, work order states they filled it with Dexron. From research it seems that Dexron and Mercon are essentially the same thing. So trans was getting got and started to slip took it to the shop and stated they had over filled it. And they came back and said over filling would not hurt it and would actually make it run cooler. I think this is a load of crap... If over filled doesn't it get fluid up into the mechanicals which then mixes the fluid into a froth that causes cavitation which will generate heat because the parts aren't properly lubed? Any how they now state the it is in fact my torque converter. Any how I need a trans pro to let me know if the overfilling and the dexron instead of mercon could cause my problems. IE is it Fords fault for the trans failure.

I say they are responsible, if the truck went in running well and thehn it left running poor and they did do something wring like over fill it they are responsible. They admited to doing something wrong.

I had to replace a trans once and had warned the customer. If the fluid has never been replaced before don't change it. He said he did it when he bought the van and wanted it changed. I changed it and ten minutes later it was done. When I drained it the new trans fluid had washed the trans and blew out the clutch material that was left. I was pissed that I had to swap it out for free. I didn't pay for the trans and I even warned the guy. It was on the work order so I had to. I even spoke to the writer. I was pissed that day. They tried blaming me. But the service writer told the service manager that I had told the customer and he wanted to do it anyways. Since that wasn't in writing the shop took to cost and owned up to it.

They haven't admitted to over filling, but I did take a video of the truck running in park, the trans temp at 100, then pulling the dip stick out wiped it clean then took a read at half way up the hot side and had spit a whole bunch out the breather. i think that will convince them. Any input is greatly appreciated.

Way over filled, they probably double filled if it was the style with the gun.

So over-filling, will that cause the torque converter to heat up and go.

Does anyone have or know where I can get the latest TSB that states which fluid ford is supposed to service our trans with? Is it mercon or mercon V.

Maybe just a typo but there is no such thing as mercon 3. Strait mercon (no number or roman numeral) often labeled as mercon/dexronIII was used, but it has been approved by ford to now use merconV. I believe dexron is a GM type fluid. Ok, so they should be using Mercon V. Here is my final question. No matter which you use Mercon or Mercon V - they should never at anytime be mixed correct?

If it was my truck and they already put in mercon/dexronIII I would be happy with that. I bought my '03 new and specifically says in the manual not to use merconV. Now they say its ok Its my understanding that ford changed merconV to be used in mercon vehichles but original merconV vehicles cannot use mercon/dexronIII. Ford doesn't have mercon/dexronIII anymore but valvoline still sells it at the local parts store. Seems weird to me. But from your original post you may have a issue with the dealer overfilling your trans.

Since they serviced the trans less than 3,000. Here's my pitch to them as to why they need to pay for it:

    A) They over filled it by at least 2qts. Proof on the receipt from their trans service it states bulk Dextron $2.25 net $20.25. That's 10 quarts. The pan only holds 8 quarts. Plus I have video of my checking the fluid level while cold and the fluid was half way up the hot section.

    B) I don't believe you can mix mercon and mercon V. Because we know they only used 10 quarts we also know they didn't flush the trans, which means there was 8 more quarts in "The system". Since I purchased this vehicle used neither I or the Ford dealer knows what fluid was already in there, which means they may have mixed fluid.
