    Question Trading 6.0 for 7.3...?

    Greetings,

This year I sold my 7.3 F250 SRW for a 6.0 F350 DRW :banghead: and less than 2 months of owning the 6.0 I had an injector go, lost the turbo (2nd one in the truck since new) and an oil pressure regulator.

Now it's throwing an EGR code.

It's only got 60,000 on it and has had regular maintenance.

After leaving us stranded on our vacation 2 different times in the middle of no where with a camper and a trailer on board, we have no confidence in the truck anymore.

We have a chance to get back into an 02' 7.3 and were wondering what you guys think?

As long as I bring it in for a full inspection, is this going to get us back into a reliable truck, in general (i know no one has a crystal ball)?

I'd love to have a 7.3 with a manual trans. I've had issues with the auto trans with the trans in my truck. It was a bad rebuild but still. It just makes me wish I had be able to find a manual trans 7.3L like I originally wanted.

If you are after reliability, ditching the 6.0 is a no brainer. However, deciding between a used 7.3 and a new 6.4 could be a tough decision.

The 7.3L is a proven performer that has been defined by its reliability. The two most likely issues you will have to deal with are the CPS and the trans. The CPS is an easy fix, just keep a spare in your glove box. The trans, on the other hand, is weak in stock form. However, a trip to John Wood would set you up with one that's bulletproof.

The 6.4L is also proving to be very reliable. If I was purchasing a new truck, I would definitely choose it over a cummins or a duramax. To get the best performance and mpg out of it, though, you will need to invest in custom tuning and you will need to get rid of the dpf.

Really, it comes down to how much you are willing to spend. I don't think you can go wrong with a 7.3L or a 6.4L

    I 2nd that.
Haven't had issues with mine. I'll be honest though I could not wait for my tranny to go so that I could take a trip to Holtville to see John. Now with his bulletproof trans and Jody's DP-tuner I'll never get rid of my truck. It takes me everywhere.

So 7.3 would be my choice.

For a good reliable tow rig you can't go wrong with the 7.3 , that is what I use to tow the 6.0 around with :yay:

But it would be nice to have a new 6.4 also

One of each? 7.3, 6 oh and then a 6.4? That'd be pretty sweet.

So do "powder metal rods" that blow windows out your block. I guess Ford agrees since they BOUGHT it back!:peace: And a blown block at 6k Gimme a break! And then again at 12k.. And a trans that also took a crap .That truck had issues. Maybe other years were better then others but that one I would never recommend. Sorry if that bothers you.

Ummm....Ron installed aftermarket accessories on his motors that are NOW known for destroying countless 7.3's. At the time, nobody knew that the results would be destructive. Ron definitely had some bad luck in that regard, and I am bummed for him. If Ford bought the truck back, then big kudos to them for stepping up when the didn't have to - especially considering the amount of aftermarket equipment involved.

The only thing that really bothers me is someone spreading misinformation, while omitting critical details.

The 7.3's with PMR's have their limits. However, with good tuning (stock or aftermarket), and responsible selection of aftermarket equipment, you can't hurt the rods.

BTW - 6.0L rods are powder metal too.

He has several levels of transmission to choose from. All are worlds better than the stock unit. Depending on what you are after, you could spend as little as $3200 (if I remember correctly).
