    Recovery pump?

I'm looking for a pump to retrieve oil from spots that I get oil from. I was using a friends 12v that had a station like handle but smaller. I want something similar but I also want to add a filter to it inline. So that I don't have to spend so much time filtering it at home. Or don't have to store such dirty oil. What are you guys using? I'm picking up 50-75 galons every monday it seems.

    Thanks guys.

I think this is the one my friend has or something similar.

Anyone using something different? I'd like to find something with a better GPM ratio.

I have a 12v Northern Tool pump, and I use a "wand" made of 1" PVC pipe that has a metal screen at the end of it with 1/16" holes in the screen. The unit is 2" long and 1 3/4" in diameter and threads right on to a threaded pvc fitting. It is from Grainger and is some kind of a sprinkler part not sure of the part # though, but they have many to choose from and most in stock, before we found this we wrapped a piece of screen door material around the end of the wand and drilled many small holes in the pipe then used a hose clamp to hold it in place. Good luck

yes thats the one works good but is a little slow we picked it because it will self prime quickly 20' of hose. we have it plummed with a couple ball valves so it will fill the tank, then pump the tank into drums when we get home. have been picking up oil with it for 16 months and still working great.

That's really good to hear, I've only been running straight veg oil for a short time but I have been collecting for a friend for almost a year. I have gotten about 150 galons for my very own use and still need to pick up another 75 galons from my friends restaurant. It really sucks when you have to do it with buckets.

Thanks Bio, I ordered a few things off of that site today. The recovery pump kit, and a few filters to put in line. A fuel filter and a water seperator, almost $300 for everything shipped but I will have a very decent kit for that price to make life a little easier for me. I love being able to drive for so cheap. $300 would've been 2 tanks of fuel a few weeks ago if I was lucky.

Got a box from Northern tool thursday, didn't have time to mess with it til today. I ordered the pump and a few inline filters for it. I got a chance to play with it today and mixed up some fuel and veg oil, man it's quick by comparison. I ran it off my truck with it idling and pumped it into the truck in like 15 seconds.

That mesh filter looks like crap, I was at the bottom of a barrel of WVO yesterday and I feell like I still smell like vomit. They put the water from them cleaning the fryer in with the oil and it grows bacteria in it. They swear they don't but I asked on of the workers and he told me he did. Nice pics, get a pic of it seperating like everyone else has.

I use a water trash pump that is gas powered 2.5hp. You can get them at Harbor freight for $140. I can transfer 55 gals in less than a minute. I like using it cause it never runs out of power like a 12v transfer pump. Only down side to using this gas power pump is that it uses 1.5 hose, 20-30ft get bulk. But if you pick up a lot of WVO and want to do it fast this is the best solution I came up with. I use my Tuthill 12v transfer pump when I pick up 30-40 gals because the car battery it's hooked up to gets discharge if I try transferring more than that.

I was thinking about one of those but they seem pretty big, how big is the one your using.

    Here are the specs.

    http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=98013

If you don't mind the size I highly recommend it. One draw back is that you have to prime the pump before you start suction. You can leave the WVO in the hose and raise hose the above the unit and let the WVO drain back in the pump, this way you can prime it without having to pour WVO into the pump housing for priming. When I first started using this pump I made a mess with WVO leaking everywhere, the excess WVO in the hose would leak out when I lay the hose down on the truck after a transfer. I made 2 plugs/caps that I would use to cap off the suction and discharge ends to block off any WVO that would leak. Now everything is all good.

I recommend using nylon hose 1.5". I found a place call Industry Hose in City of Industry that sells it for $2.06 a ft. I use 10ft on discharge side, I leave the pump in my truck and transfer straight into my drums. I use 20ft in the suction side. If I need more length I would move the pump out of my truck and place it on the floor. This length seems to work pretty good all around. I've always manage to make it work with this length. This pump costs as much as a small 12v transfer pump but will transfer a lot of WVO in very little time.

The only issues i have with a gas powered pump is the noise...It draws alot of attention to what you are doing, especially at 5am in the middle of an empty strip mall or shopping center. The priming is sometimes a pain in the arse, but leaving WVO in the hose and using a couple pvc ball valves will help it just makes the hose really heavy. If time is a big factor you cant beat the gas pumps...
