    Straight veg oil no mods...

Ok guys I have been wanting to run straight vegetable oil in my truck for a while now. I don't have a system or heaters so I know that it wont be perfect for me. I was a little afraid how the injectors or pump might behave but other than needing to give it a little time to warm up it's fine or maybe even a bit better. Once it warms up it runs way quiet.

This is not for everybody and I wanted to upgrade my injectors anyways and also this is not my daily driver. For those of you that it is a DD and can't afford to make a mess out of your truck, this may not be right for you.

I have been running about 50-50 diesel and virging soybean oil for 4 years. All I do is add the oil to the tank and then top it off with #2. There are no issues at all running that ratio in our fuel tanks. If you are using used veggie oil, you can do that as well, just make sure it is filtered well before you dump it in your tank.

Be VERY CAREFUL with cold starting a diesel on veggie oil. It may appear to run just fine but once you get the crankcase oil analyzed your opinion might change.

    Run a two tank system!

I was worried about that but my blackstone report came back OK. If you do it, get your oil analized.

I'm using WVO from two mexican restaurants. I heat the oil on a propane grill to boil the water out and to help it flow while I filter it. I had about a 1/8th tank when I added 3 galons of VO added $20 of diesel about 4.5 gal and then added aonther 6-7 galons of VO.

An odd thing is that the fuel gauge doesn't seem to have moved now since I last added VO. I drove it about 75-100 miles the other day and another 30 miles today. I want to top off the tank with a 50/50 mix and see what kind of milleage I can get.

Why would the report come back bad, that doesn't make sense to me. Unless your burning real dirty oil, but if your that lazy to not filter the oil you'd be too lazy to change the oil in the motor.

Just finished filtering the last of the WVO I had at the house. Went earlier to eat at my friends restaurant and got yelled at for not picking up his WVO. LOL That's the first time it's happened to me. It looked pretty gunky, I told him I'd pick it up in the morning. Anyone want to take some of the oil off my hands?

I have a little stock pile but he still has veg oil for me to pick up. Maybe anotehr 40 galons. I have about 100 maybe more, but it still needs to be filtered.

I found someone to help me collect it and he's going to keep most of it. I just couldn't get a hold of him and I still had a lot I needed to filter at the house. I've only been driving my truck because of the free fuel. I need to do an oil change on it now since I've been driving it so much. It's nice driving my big truck for so cheap.

Cold veg is thick and will not completely burn at start up, the unburned veg oil can get past the rings and into the crankcase causing excessive bearing wear.

It really has nothing to do with the quality of the oil or how well it's filtered!

    Get your oil analyzed!

Ah yeah that. Yes it can, thanks for that info I know what I am doing if I blow it will be my fault for not wanting to pay rediculous cost of diesel. There are many ways to run a diesel and I'm chosing this one for the time being. I know it is harmful to the engine.

I started this post more to see what others are runing for fuel, to see about what kits are being used. To learn more about the process. I know it can't have water and needs to be filtered as best as possible to begin with, and the engines don't like to start on the thick oil.

    Bob,

What I would do is run at least a 20% mix of diesel with veg oil in the summer and at least 50/50 in the winter. If you truck is slow to start you need to add more diesel.

You gotta get your crankcase oil analyzed, a 7.3 PSD is 10 grand to replace!

Thanks, I've added diesel to it recently. The other day I hadn't started it up in a while and it did get hard to start. I drove it to the gas station to add $40 of diesel since I don't plan to drive it for a little while and that will help the oil stay more fluid and not be so thick.

I spoke to my boss about me using the shop to replace my motor if I have to. Not that I want to. I can buy a crashed 7.3 for the motor if I ever blow the motor because of my veg oil or over fueling. I'm looking for a spare motor at the moment. I sort of want to build a block with better rods and pistons, we'll see. Might be out of my $$$ range but maybe a few dollars or parts at a time.
