    Cummins??????

K so my search for a new work truck that can give me better than my current 9-10mpg (damn lift and rack lol) is still on....

first i found this one:Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

its a real nice SD that would almost be too nice to put into construction... also im not too sure ill be getting the kind of MPG i want out of it (17mpg+)

so im now searching into going with a diff diesel.... i really like the Cummins engines but damn are the dodge trucks ugly... but if it will get me in the MPG i want im willing to get one...

so my question to you guys (diesel gods) what year cummins do i want? i did a quick search and found this 04 for a good price:Cars For Sale: Car Details - AutoTrader.com

also i know the stock trans are weak so thats something that im going to have to maybe fix....

now before we get into dodges suck.... remember i agree with you :) but the cummins engines are great motors..... i need something reliable and that will get me great MPG.... i drive around 100 miles a day with mixed city. highway miles

so let me know what you guys think is the year i need in a cummins?

2004.5-2005 are the ISB 610 motors. Best common rail motor out there by far.

You can't really go wrong with any of the common rails though. '03+ really are strong trucks.

My dad has a 97 cummins that he tows a 10k lb trailer with 6 days a week. He has approx 120k miles on it and it has been dead reliable aside from the transmission. I am not a fan of the looks, but they are proven motors for sure.

When I was looking at the Dodge a good diesel mechanic told me just get a '98 or better 24 valve and you can make it what ever you want.
'97 Dodge 3500, Club Cab, 4x4, Dually, 5.9 Cummins 12V, SMOG EXEMPT, 4" turbo back, gauges, EGR Delete. Built Auto with billet twin disk converter, TransGo shift kit, HF clutches, HD Sprag, PML Pan, AFE stage 1, 100 fuel plate, AFC full forward. 3000 GSK.

Yes, my last truck was an '06 Superduty, liked it, just too much money to own, SMOG, register, build, and maintain.

Towing Queen for: '09 Attitude 33AKSG Fithwheel Toyhauler, FX package, all options and then some, axle oversprung conversion for 5" lift, 15K GVWR

the 2nd gen 24 valves (98.5-02) are actually the "worst" cummins platform from what I've been told. They have alot of VP44 issues, and just don't make the power as easy as the 12 valves or the common rails. Plus the milage isn't there either.

'03 or newer is the way to go.

I've been to that dealer lot. Are you sure you want a Cummins? You might get hooked and then sell Christine and go Dodge. Is it worth the risk?

Well what about this setup then. Purchase a Cummins wrapped in a dodge, a Bobcat, and a BigTex dump trailer. That way you have a work truck, dump trailer, and a Bobcat like you need. The nice thing about having a dump trailer than a dump truck is that the trailer cost less and you can transport the Bobcat in it.

You'll love the common rail Dodge. The motor is sooooo sweet. Makes the rest of the truck almost worth it.
