The 6.4L Power Stroke® Diesel



Overview

The 6.4L is one of the most advanced diesel engines on the market. It has a host of new design features that combine to deliver increased horsepower and torque combined with quieter idling and a smoother ride. The new 6.4L also meets the much stricter 2007 EPA emissions standards with features like an active Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), enhanced Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), advanced multi-shot piezoelectric injection control, two-stage turbocharger and a superior engine structure.




Two Stage Turbocharger

  • Provides optimum power and smooth acceleration from takeoff to top-end
  • High nickel cast iron turbine housing for durability
  • New Variable Turbocharger Geometry (VTG) mechanism designed to reduce and resist corrosion
  • Electronically controlled VTG actuator is designed to eliminate failure due to contamination; it also provides quick response on acceleration




High Pressure Common Rail Injection System


  • Improves cold weather drivability because injection timing is independent of oil viscosity
Eliminates injector damage due to clogged fuel filters/fuel starvation

Piezoelectric injector actuation allows for multiple injections, improves combustion and reduces noise





Upgraded Cooling System




  • Provides ample cooling capacity for two-stage turbocharger operation and sustained high engine loads

Includes upsized water pump and increased cooling fan capacity

New fuel cooling circuit to reduce high (return) fuel temperatures generated by the high pressure injection system and to cool the turbocharger electronics
New Exhaust Gas Recirculation System (EGR) with Dual Coolers and Oxidation Catalyst




  • Dual popped EGR valve with high-force DC motor reduces EGR Valve failures

Dual EGR coolers reduce fouling and valve deposits

EDOC (EGR Oxidation Catalyst) reduces fouling by converting heavy hydrocarbon lacquer to dry soot
