I talked to a local shop and they told me running 3.73 with 37" tires is not wise. Burns up every thing. Any input? He recommended 4.88.

4.88 is way too low.. i would do 4.30's...
you can run it stock but rememeber your putting extra stress on stock components like your trans and engine... your shift points are not in the right place also....
if you can afford it it will be a very good upgrade... i went to Hoopers 2 days ago and those guys rock... as soon as i get my 4x4 working again im going their to get my gears done...

I was thinking the same thing but I have 35's.........maybe ging to 4.30?
I think I want to be at 2000 RPM at 70MPH rather than 75/77. I also think these rigs use less fuel if they stay at the torque peak and not lugging.
I watch all the time, under 2000 RPM and a slight grade = EGT goes up = more fuel. I think I can say there are no "flat" roads in San Diego County. Not to mention a little more power for towing.
Let's get some memmbers chimming in with gear ratio/tire size/ and RPM at say 70MPH...........how did it run, and MPG before/after. Mabe a few "Butt" dyno readings.
'97 Dodge 3500, Club Cab, 4x4, Dually, 5.9 Cummins 12V, SMOG EXEMPT, 4" turbo back, gauges, EGR Delete. Built Auto with billet twin disk converter, TransGo shift kit, HF clutches, HD Sprag, PML Pan, AFE stage 1, 100 fuel plate, AFC full forward. 3000 GSK.
Yes, my last truck was an '06 Superduty, liked it, just too much money to own, SMOG, register, build, and maintain.
Towing Queen for: '09 Attitude 33AKSG Fithwheel Toyhauler, FX package, all options and then some, axle oversprung conversion for 5" lift, 15K GVWR
for 35's your not a whole lot off from factory..... its not worth the 1k+ price tag in my opinion...
if you really want to go with new gears i would only go 4.10 for 35's
I am an odd ball. I have 35's with 4.56's and love it.
2000 I am at 63.
My truck tows a lot though, so that was the deciding factor.
OD with the TC locked up most of the time.
With 35's do 4.30's. It will help out a lot.
With 37's and above 4.56's
I believe with great than 4.56's you need to change the carrier. Might be wrong though.
4.30's with 35's
2000 - 67
4.10's with 35's
2000 - 71
3.73's with 35's
2000 - 78
Either way go to Hoopers. Great guys. They did mine.

Yeah,
I am with you Raul, But all the stress from the 37"s and towing has torn up my rear end, the guy at coast driveline in ventura is going to install a full posi rear end and he said I could get away with 4.56 and a good tune. It is gunna cost $3,000 front and rear with all new parts. I think if i dont do it I am just going to keep going through trannies. HELP.
wow 3k?
is that including the LS in the rear?
because i can get you the detroit tru trac for the rear for lil over 500.. and gears front and backs with the master install kits for around 700ish and you can get the gears done for 250ish each from hoopers prob a lil more for the rear because of the LS....
if we go this route i can prob almost save you 1k....
I went 456 with 37's and like it. Probably could have gone 430 since I dont tow heavy but 456 will be good in the long run, 488 would be too low IMHO.
Go to hoopers, 250 an end on labor. They get good prices on gears but I ended up bringing my own. 456 does not require new carrier.
Raul, I'd like one of your trutracs, pm me, or post, the price. Should have done it with the gears, but oh well.

I have 4.30 with 35's. I was going to do 4.56s but found to be a tad bit to low. I tow a 14,000LB trailer and have no problema. And on the freeway with nothing it is not bad. 75@2100RPMs. I had John wood do them. With Ford Racing gears in the rear. And a Dana Spicer parts up front. John is very picky and it turned out perfect. 3000 those gears have to be gold. You should only have about a grand in parts. Using OEM parts. Most of the use Genuine Gear, which i was told not the best in big trucks that tow alot. I helped John and learned a whole lot and it was the cheapest of anyone. Call him and see If you can help on yours.

I have 35" tires and tow a heavy trailer. I put in 4:10 gears. Seemed to help a little. If I was to do it all over again, I would go with 4:30. I notice that I get better mpg when I am going 75+ mph. RPMs are around 2100 at 75. 4:30 would help with more with towing.
These trucks like to be around 2000 on the freeway. Let them drop below 2000 towing and you are really lugging the engine and the EGT's will go up quick.
I paid a lot less than that at Hoopers. They are great.
I know how to do gears and what the pattern looks like.
They showed it to me. They did it in one day for me.
4.10's in my opinion are not enough to satisfy the cost.
Plus think of the Tow boss trucks, 4.30's stock.
My dad has one and it tows great.

I have 4.30s with 37 and I like it, if you tow alot and heavy loads I would go with 4.56s just my 2 cents.:smokin:
Ok, well i am thinkin 4.30 & 4.56 better sleep on it for a few days. thanks guys:waytogo:
