    PML tranny pan install report

    Parts from K-mans:
O ring for external filter $4.89
    external tranny filter $17.49
    Mercon SP $3.96 X 12qts
    Internal tranny filter $17.99
    shipping $27.68
    Total $115.57

PML sand cast deep pan from ITP Diesel $199.95
    shipping $13.50
    Total $213.45

4 more qts Mercon SP from ford dealer $23.71 ($5.50 each)

    All parts......$352.73

Re-used factory pan gasket and it took 13qts of fluid to bring up to proper level after much driving around the neighborhood and stopping to check on level ground.
Three (3) qts left over Mercon SP for external filter changes in-between next change or flush.
Tranny running at 110* after about 20 miles driving running empty. Out side temp 75-80*. Have to wait and see for towing numbers. Pan is of excellent quality and looks good. Raw aluminum for good heat transfer.
Truck had just under 22,000 miles and maybe 5000 of that was towing my 19' toybox around 8,000 loaded. The fluid looked, smelled and tasted (don't ask), just like the new stuff and the external filter was clean. The internal filter is just a fine set of screens in the bottom of the pick-up. Changed it just because I was in it.

At what mileage should the first trans service be done on these trucks? Sounds like a nice setup

    30,000 miles

Just had mine done at the dealer. For the service, all they do is back flush the trannie using a sucker machine (it sucks the old fluid out and pumps the new in). They said they don't normally change the external filter, but I had them put a new one on.

They (the dealership) said there is no need to drop the pan as the back flush cleans the internal screen and gets everything clean inside.

Doing the trannie fluid change at home is a little difficult as the torque converter doesn't have a drain plug.

I have the same pan on my truck. You will like it. It will lower your temps also.
Without the trailer the highest I see is 165 range. Most of the time it is in the 150 range.
Most of the time it is right under 185 towing the trailer.

Get the right size wrench and have a budy hold on to the filter block while you put torque on it. Keep everything in place while you try to turn.
