    loss of power

my truck pulls hard until about 2500 rpm and then goes nowhere until it shifts into the next gear(automatic) then takes off again but wont pull past 2500. It feels like it is running out of fuel and i have notoiced my fuel pump on the frame below driver seat is getting loud when i turn the key on to start it up. Could my fuel pump be dying? Is there another pump in the tank to feed this one or does it draw all the way from the tank on it's own? my s.e.s. light comes on sometimes when this happens also. i want to install a fuel pressure gauge on the engine, but i want it to run good first. Thanks guys.

I'd say clogged fuel filter, when your pump gets loud that means it straining to move fuel.

I changed my fuel filter a couple days ago and it got better, but now it is right back to the same old loss of power thats why i decided to ask for your guys help. unfortunately I am running pump diesel right now before someone blames it on the bio-diesel which i never had problems with. thanks

I have heard this quite a few times. I would run a new upgraded fuel system. people have told me that the ford fuel system cant pump enough fuel at high rpm and starves the injectors. I dont know if something like the fass would do it?

i agree it could help solve the problem, but it just started last week and i have done nothing to my truck except drive it and fuel it up at the same station that i always use. my pump has been loud for month at least when i turn the key on to start it up but now it wont hardly accelerate at all.

Here is what I would do. First unplug the Edge unit and plug the sensors back in normally. then remove the fuel filter and drain the bowl. have someone turn the key on, but not start it. See how fast the bowl fills up. it should only take a second or 2 at most if the pump is good. It could also be the fuel pressure regulator is gummed up and might need to be cleaned.
Next I would look for boost leaks and check the wastegate to make sure it is staying closed.

sounds like my truck may have had the same problem. cause i remember i got a chip and i drove home on it an going up hills under boost the SES light would flicker. Then when i got it home my truck would start up fine and run fro a little bit then it would die. it died on me once when i was almost to work. everytime i took the chip out my truck would run fine at stock level. no codes were ever tripped so i thought maybe lock up in the trans was to aggressive cause the truck it was made for had 4.88's and i have 3.73's. can the fuel system cause that and not trip any codes? maybe i will put the chip back in and see if i can pull a code when it kills my motor and the session light is tripped.

Sorry for being so long winded.

i dont know it it works, but i have put my truck is stock mode level zero, where the edge is basically just a gauge display and it runs the same as it does in the level three where i leave it usually. is the regulator located in the fuel filter housing or externally leading to the filter housing? seems like this may be where the problem is because my truck runs great for a couple hours with a new filter then it goes back to crap once the filter has any resistance at all, but the filter is still completely clean looking and not too heavy(full of crap) when i pull it out.

The regulator is on the drivers side of the bowl. But even thought you are returning the Edge to 0, I would still unplug it all. it is just 2 connections. One at the ICP sensor and 1 at the MAP sensor.

thanks for the help and ideas i will let you know what happens when i try these. I am still curious if there is an in-tank pump thet feeds the one on the frame?

    Nope, no tank pump!
The frame mounted pumps sucks fuel from the tank...no help from the tank area!

Note: On the 7.3L some folks were concerned that the suck pump was sucking air from poor connectors/fittings....doesn't seem to be a problem on the 6.0L.

I just had a power loss situation on hills. Turns out the pickup filters in the tank were clogged from years of grit from dirty gas stations. The sender was pulled and the filters replaced - all is well. I have a transfer flow 58 gallon replacement tank, but the mechanic at the dealer that did the work said that the stock tanks have been having problems with the insulation on the inside flaking off and clogging the intake filters - they even had two F450's there for tank replacement while mine was being worked on. If the chip isn't the problem, I would look in the tank.

i was planning on using compressed air to blow out the line going to the tank when i pull the line off the oem pump to possibly clear the pick up end of it out in case there is some blockage in the tank. hopefull it will work unless there is a check valve or an anti siphon (one way) inline that i dont know about.

well it died today all i can do is idle otherwise it is unusable. I pulled the filter and drained the bowl, turned the key on and it took 30 seconds to fill the filter housing half full of fuel! I am sure that my fuel pump is to blame and i will be installing a new one this weekend. What specialty tools are needed to remove the fittings on the fuel pump? thanks guys
