    DIY: EGR Cleaning w/ pics

Well, i finally have a day with nothing to do at all :P

    First step:

    Finding the EGR
Unclip the adapter before removing this

    Second step:
trying to get the darn thing out! Well i got it out using a large pry bar and a big vice grip

Eww! Look at this nasty thing

    Third Step:
Cleaning! Sprayed it down with some brake cleaner at first to start getting the gunk off. Pulled out some q-tips and paper towels along with a flat head screw driver to get in all the nooks and crannies. Finished it up with some simple green

When i do this again, i would use CARB cleaner instead of brake cleaner as it is less corrosive

    Done!:

Now just re-install and you're done!
    Nice and clean!

I definitely noticed a 2-3 MPG increase after doing this cleaning job

I have done mine a couple of times. It starts to get dirty, then it levels off. The first time with just under 40,000, it was pretty dirty, almost like above. The last time had about 10,000 on it. It was starting to get dirty, but not bad.
On cleaning, try Chem-Dip. Works great.
Looks like you clean things like I do, sitting on the ground. How many times you spray your leg? Ha Ha

Nice article. I will have to take a look at mine. I have never done it and it is getting close to 100K. Maybe I will just bypass the EGR and not worry about it.

I just cleaned mine this morning, if you use a large set of channel locks and slightly rock the valve it will pop right out. Mine engine has 70,000 miles on it, and looked almost like the one in the above picture. When I first pulled the valve out, it seemed frozen until the break cleaner started to loosen things up. I cleaned it for 1 1/2 hours using jewelers screw drivers & Q-Tips (used about 60 Q-tips) till it was shiny new looking.

I took the truck to the market and I swear it runs so much smoother now.

I'll be cleaning the EGR every few months from now on, thanks for the tip.
