Readers Digest version - Only go to Peck Road Ford Truck Sales (PRFTS located at the 60 and 605 Fwys) for service if you don't need your vehicle back in a timely manner.
I had a check engine light come on my stock '05 Excursion with 14,700 miles, while traveling up the grapevine. There was no change in the performance of the engine, and no obvious problems.
Just one week prior I had brought my Excursion to Sunrise Ford for routine maintenance, and really didn't feel like making the trip again from the San Gabriel Valley to Fontana. I instead made the decision to take my Excursion to a local dealership that I felt would be very knowledgeable of the 6.0 motor. I decided to take it to Peck Road Ford Truck Sales which does most of its business in commercial vehicles, most of them with the 6.0, and is only ten minutes from my house.
When I dropped it off I was told it would take one day to complete the repair, which I didn't think was too bad (I bet Sunrise would have it done in a matter of a couple hours). The lady who took my information seemed to be concerned about the inservice date for warranty purposes, but stated she was having problems with her computer in order to find out the inservice date. She said she would call me with the inservice date once she obtained it, but I never got a call from her. More so I was surprised with the initial estimate for repair being $600 since it was simply a check engine light complaint. She told me they write that down on all the "small" vehicles that are brought in for service. No complimentary shuttle was offered so I began my walk home (~5 miles).
Over 24 hours after having dropped it off (day 2), I called the dealership to check on the status and I was informed that no one had looked at it yet, and that the normal wait was 3-4 days. Not happy with this response I spoke further with the service advisor, who told me he would have someone look at it that afternoon. I called back again that same day after 5pm, and was told no one was able to look at it and that it would be looked at in the morning.
I called again the next morning, now day 3, and was informed the tech was looking at it, and that I should call back in an hour if I wanted to know what the problem was. I received a call mid-day informing me that it was a bad EBP (exhaust back pressure) sensor and that they would have to order the part and it would be in the following day.
Day 4 came around and I was called in the mid-afternoon informing me that my vehicle was done and ready for pickup. Unfortunately the call came too late for me to pick up the vehicle due to my work schedule, so I didn't pick it up until today. I had no problems picking it up this afternoon, and didn't find anything wrong. No complimentary wash, but that doesn't bother me.
In conclusion, my Excursion is an extra vehicle, so being without it for 5 days didn't hurt me. If you depend on your vehicle as a daily driver, or if it's your source of income (i.e. work truck), definitely think twice before going to PRFTS for serice, as your vehicle will be in service jail for a while. If your vehicle is part of a large fleet and it doesn't matter how long it's gone, then PRFTS may be okay for you. As for me, I have experienced PRFTS, and I think I will continue to take my business to Sunrise Ford in Fontana as I have done in the past. At Sunrise Ford I feel as though I am treated like a king, whereas at PRFTS I feel like a second rate citizen, second rate to all the refuse trucks, ambulances, police vehicles, and other big contract vehicles that are brought in for service there.
