    bad idle, white smoke

hey all. i have recently started to experience a couple problems.

first, i have a little bit of white exhaust smoke, usually comes out once the truck returns to idle, ie. like if i pull up to the house, stop, put it in reverse to back into driveway, and it puffs out some white smoke. also, it will puff some out right on take off, but its not constant while i drive. only during those types of situations. sometimes on take off as well.

also, starting the truck sometimes, it wont start easily, and when it does, it idles at about 450-500 rpm's, roughly, and there is no throttle response, and it dies. or, it will idle rough for about 15 seconds, and slowly build up to about 700 rpms, and then the throttle works.

only mods the truck has is mprp turbo back exhaust, no cat convertor, and an air raid intake filter only, not the whole system, just the filter. the smoke also seems to have a blue tint to it, so im sure its oil in there as well.

and idea where to start looking? also, i think hoss350 goes to tuttle click ford for service in orange county? i would love to take it to bobby williams at sunrise, but fontana seems to be a bit of a drive, im gonna try to get it there though, to let his techs have a look at it.

    thanks guys..

Sounds like a leak in the high pressure oil rail to me. Its probably more previalnt with a warm motor, and cranks a little longer sometimes when the oil is warm before it starts......

Its possilble its coolant and that the EGR cooler is bad....but given the idle charactaristics change, id lean towards the HPOP system....

Have you checked for any codes?

To check for codes, you can go to Autozone and ask to borrow their OBII scanner. You can plug it in under your dash to the right of your ebrake and hood release. It should be able to give you any codes that are going off.

well, came home from work today. parked in the driveway. went to leave about an hour ago to go to a friends house and see the ufc fight. it wont even start. it cranks over, fires up, hits about 500 rpms, then just dies out. getting it towed to sunrise tomorrow....

its gonna be a high pressure oil system leak. It will probably fire cold (minimum 10 hours after last startup).....but if you shut it off after starting it...it wont fire again untill its bone cold....

Odds are its either a blown out D ring in one of the injectors, or a bad STC (quick connect at the HPOP) fitting

so far you are spot on. fired right up this am. its running in the driveway right now. gonna taker her around the block, warm it up a bit, park it, and see if it starts up or not. thinking back, every time it did it this past week, is when the motor was warm. starts like a champ every am, and every day after work.

thanks again. i will let the tech know what you have told me...

Thumbs down tuttle click let me down

well, here is the update on the truck. sorry its been a bit. i took my truck to tuttle click in irvine. they had the truck for a week. they drove the hell out of it, every day. emptied my fuel tank of 10 gallons of fuel. they found nothing wrong with it. know why? they didnt bother looking for anything. they truck never messed up when they had it, so they assumed it was ok. they told me to bring it back, if it did it again. well, you guessed it, that night, it did it again. i had told them exactly what mschn99 told me, about the hpop and leaky oring, and they didnt even bother to look at it. how do i know they didnt look at it?

i took my truck to Sunrise in Fontana. Donald in service LISTENED to my concerns, assured me he would have his guys give my truck a thorough once over, and find the problem. anyone wanna guess what was wrong with my truck? a leaky connector at the hpop! they guys at sunrise took the time to look for a problem, and fix it. even though it is a huge inconvenience for me to get to fontana, since its 60 miles from my house, they have earned my business from now on. more important, they have my trust now. Kudos to Donald and Sunrise Ford's Diesel Tech's.

got to test drive a new 08 f-450 while i was there too. wow what a nice rig. scary quiet inside those things with the windows up. lots of grunt with the 4.88 gears in them. salesman thought he was gonna sell me one. im gonna buy one, eventually, but not from him. Bobby Williams is gonna get that one..

    Thumbs up

Good to hear positive feedback on Sunrise!!

Like you, I drive 60 plus miles to get service there, but it's worth it!!

PS Doesn't it really make you angry when you tell the dealership what is wrong and what to fix and they don't do it. I know a lot of us here on the site know more about our engines than some of the "Ford Diesel Factory Trained Technicians (FDFTT)". I had an incompetent FDFTT at a local dealership ask me, "So, you think you know more about fixing this engine than I do?" My reply, "AHH, YEAH!!" Last time he touched my truck!!
