    6.4 L Test Drive

Drove the new Superduty 6.4 today. My dealer received a bunch of trucks this week. They said the sold 6 yesterday and 7 today. A guy was taking one home when I was there. Capistrano Ford in San Juan Capistrano CA. They had another 20 + trucks in stock.

Anyway have a 6.0 PSD with Bank Big Hoss Bundle. My impression of the new truck was it has more power, comparing stock to stock, but not a huge difference. It is substantially quieter, very nice. Turning radius was much better. Interior was nice but a bit too much bling for me. I will say the King Ranch leather was very nice. Overall impression was very positive. Hell the tailgate step might just sell the truck by itself. There is a clear winning after market idea for the other 10 million trucks out there.

The catch of course is my 2005 6.0 PSD with lots of mods (Banks, Donahue, Weld, Stereo, DVD, etc.) will sell for maybe $30K with 32K miles on it. The new truck at a good deal for a MSRP of $54K was $47K. Then I would have to add all that stuff back.

So I will wait a few years until they get this engine issue sorted. Would hate to have one of a few 1000, 6.4's. My guess is Ford will have to cave or go under. IH is playing hardball in a big time poker game. Would love to be at that table!

Go to the 6.4 threads at TDS, sounds like the new owners are complaining of not very much power on the new trucks. That's regular driving and towing!

I drove both a 6.0 and a 6.4 back to back, towing and not.

    Unloaded, it's barely faster.

When towing the 10,000 lb trailer, the 6.4 made it feel like 7,000 lbs, while with the 6.0 you KNEW that was 10k lbs behind you.

    Just my perception.

Towing back to back is the true test and the one you never get to make. I suspected that might be the case, as I swapped trucks with a friend towing home from the Dunes a few weeks back. He towed with my truck and I towed my trailer with his truck (2006 Duramax with cat back exhaust, no other mods). No question his truck had more power. When I hit the hills in my truck I have to go to stock and can only pull 45-50 mph up the big grades. His truck 65, no problem. The extra 80 ft lbs to torque and gear sure help, so I would expect the 6.4 to do better.

I guess I will see what I can do with what I got with John Wood or someone else and go from there.

    Drove one last week.

It is much quieter than a 07 6.0....starting up side by side....the difference is significant. Probably due to the split shot injection coming back.

As for power, the big thing, was the way that the 6.4L did not unlock/lock the converter nearly as ofter as the 6.0L. You could barely feel the 2nd turbo kick-in, but it it noticable.

The dealer I was at said they were "HOT", and was wanting fulling MSRP.

Nothing is worth MSRP.....other then a maybe a Lambo :)

    Hi Tom.....
If you were pulling it backwards, wasn't it in front of you? How did you not know it was there?

    Hi Dave
