    Motor mounts

So it looks like at least the passenger side mount is shot.....

The motor mounts, how difficult are these to replace? What exactly is involved in changing these? Unfortunately I don't exactly have the capability (hoist) to hold the weight of a 7.3 to change a mount.

I would like to be able to do some of these things on my own.... But when I can afford it, I am thinking of just taking it to a shop.

Towing SUCKS when you can feel the engine going HUNKACLUNKDUNKRUNKBUNKCLUNKUNKUNK in the whole truck from under the hood at 2800rpms.

    Ryan,

The motor mounts just bolt to the block. I would think that if you rented a heavy-duty engine hoist to support the weight of the motor, you could get in there and swap out the mount.

However, I could be wrong! I've never swapped engine mounts. Maybe Gene will offer up his knowledge on this matter. ;)

Also, if you need a really clear picture of what the mount looks like, I have an engine sitting here that lost its truck at some point, and I can shoot you a couple pics.

You may be able to lift the engine slightly with a jack and wood blocks in the right place. The wood block needs to be hardwood. Regular pine lumber will split. Else, use a piece of steel. You will have to figure out where to put the block up against the bottom of the engine without causing damage. If you have not done anything like this before then take it to a shop. You don't want the engine to fall on your hand.

All you need to do is lift the engine on one side about 1/8". Then unbolt the old one and slide the new one in.

That would be great if you could. I think that would help a ton... this is all new to me, and I am just trying to see what my options are.

Thanks so far for the help both of you!

Gene thanks so much for the offer, I may have to take you up on that some weekend (I am tied up the next three weekends). I'd love to be able to not pay a shop and have the experience of doing it.... dinner, lunch, a case of root beer :cheers444: (I know you don't drink :)), you name it, on me!

Thanks for the pics Anthony I think those help.

To R&R, it looks like you have to loosen the two bolts/studs (one on top and bottom of the closest piece), then remove the four bolts (two on each side of the black piece), it slides out, then reverse for installation?

Hey i did my motor mounts in place. I used a engine hoist on the top, and used some timbers to support a jack under the motor. I think i used a pc of 3/4 plywood to distribute the weight under the pan,but it was not holding all of the motor weight, just a little helper to keep the motor from any sway from the picker. Make sure to undo your battery when u do the pass side, its close to the starter.Have fun..
    cheers
I will run u over for FREE!!!!!

Holy cow. Things have been so crazy lately, I totally forgot about this thread.

Gene thank you so much for the offer since we talked in Oxnard. I will definitely keep that in mind. Thanks all for the suggestions...

I got laid off work today, kind of at a bad time so I really just don't know when I can get to any of these projects I need to right now.

I must say, I haven't even looked into this almost since my last reply, anyone know what a set of motor mounts cost? I'll start looking for the parts probably soon, as I still might manage to try this, towing is horrible as much as this shakes my poor truck. :bawling:
