Villa Ford of Orange CA loves their parts: Long rant about their prices on parts

    Hi everyone,
Here is a warning about parts prices at Villa Ford, Orange CA.
I wrote a letter to Liz Farr, Parts & Service Director and got a call back from Ken Gallagher Parts Manager.
The bottom line is their parts seem to be about 2x the cost that you can get at other dealerships. I now believe that if they like their parts that much, they can keep them.
    Any other stories?
Here is the story and the letter I wrote to them:
    28 June 2006
    Liz Farr
    Parts & Service Director
    Customer Relations
    2250 North Tustin
    Orange Ca 92865
    Terry Erickson
    12 Deer Creek Lane
    Laguna Hills CA 92653
    Reference: Parts Invoice #264561
    Dear Ms. Farr,
I have a long history as a customer with Villa Ford, as my father was a Ford employee. I bought my first new truck from Villa Ford over 20 years ago, I grew up in Orange and my family and I continue to drive Ford cars and trucks.
I am currently on my 4th Ford truck right now and have put over 250,000 miles on two of them.
I was recently very disappointed while buying a part from Villa Ford and for some reason I have taken this personally.
I am changing the clutch on my 2003 F350 crew cab 4x4 and planned to replace a throw out bearing plastic pivot (stud, F81Z7B602AA). An article on the web on TheDieselStop.com and a magazine article in Diesel Power Magazine identified the part as about a $5.00 dealer part that should be replaced if you replace the arm that was redesigned in 2002. I planned to change it since I was there and it was inexpensive even though my truck already has the upgraded arm.
On 26 June I went to the Ford dealership next door to my office and they gave me a list of dealers that had the part and told me the part is a $6.50 part. Villa Ford is on my way home and you had 2. The parts guy got me the part, printed out the invoice #254561 and it showed $13.50 as the list and sell price plus tax.
I questioned him about the price and he told me he doesn’t know anything about anybody else’s price said “hey, we need to pay our mortgages”.
Is the part price something the individual sales person determines on the spot or is this something that Villa Ford has a policy on? Could you explain Fords recommended retail prices and Villa Fords pricing policy on parts?
I walked away with a strong negative feeling that this individual increased the price to me more than double the recommended retail price to increase his bonus.
So I guess my question is does Villa Ford charge 2X the suggested price on parts as policy or did this sales person decide to give me, an individual customer, a “special” (my buddies and I have another term for this) 2X price.
I felt you as the Director and Customer Relations person would be best to explain this to me.
    Thank you very much,

Good letter, to the point. I am curious to know what their response was...:smirk:
on Edit: I checked the part number on powerstrokeshop.com and they list the MSRP as $7.95 and they sell it for $5.95. FYI

Ken Gallagher's response was that they will not share thier pricing policy. That if I show them a price they will normally match it - which was not the case - i gave them a print out of the price and they said too bad.

    Thumbs down

Star Ford in Glendale must use that same pricing policy.
Their prices vary by 0-100% above the norm!! Like you, I was shocked by some of their pricing.
I normally won't go to Star for parts (or service!).

Theodore Robin's Ford in Costa Mesa got me for $56.54 for a VSS sensor. The msrp for a VSS is $17.39.

Needless to say, I will never do business with this dealership again.

Price gouging seems to be a serious problem with a number of Ford dealerships. :(

I thought that was pretty much typical of all dealerships?

    Angry

    Ryan.........

That was a cold shot!!! :o

Not "ALL" are that way! :)

If you have had a bad experience with a specific dealership, go ahead and post if you'd like. May save some member here some money if he/she knows they are high priced.

But, let's not turn this into a general dealership bashing thread.

    Thanks!!

Oh no no I wasn't trying to do that at all... parts departments have always seemed expensive, and I know they do vary greatly though. When I was looking for a (new) SD HPOP I was quoted $540 all the way to almost $900 from three or four different dealers.

What I got from this thread is that some I guess can have decent prices. Which I just have to say I've not really heard of before.

No cold shot or bashing intended...

:yay:Now that is way out of line for such a little part like that. But i have seen better prices at the dealer for some items.I worked as a service manager for about eight years in auto repair and i can say that most all dealers parts departments will get you for what they can. There a a few that will work with you on the price if you get to know them. That was about five year ago also so it could be better or worse by now i would not know, i deal with the parts department as little as possible nowadays.I will make or have made for me first if at all possible. It make me feel like i am the man.:jump::yay:

Ry-Ry...That same piece of plastic is 14.95 here at Jim Burke Ford in Bako.

    Such a shame...

My Slave cylinder kit was 118.00, and at Car Quest Auto it is 56.00

Just a matter if you want OEM or aftermarket.

Seem to have fair prices and super fast shipping! Your clutch part in question is $5.73 here with MSRP shown as $7.80.

About a year ago I cracked the turn signal lens on my passenger tow mirror. Smacked a tree with it. Went to my local Ford Dealer and bought the lens for $171 . . . :jawdrop: For a lens??? Thinking I was getting ripped off I jumped on the net, found the above website, and low and behold $74 for exactly the same part!!! Ordered it that minute and it showed up 3 days later. Took the other one back to the local dealer and that is the last time I've stepped foot in that parts department. MSRP was only $14X something!!! Geez!!!
