I personally don't see any advantage to this filter. Matter of fact, I see some disadvantages! (Yeah, I know, I'm a party pooper!!)
Having to clean a filter is a real pain in the butt and puts a responsibility on you that you do a really good job of cleaning.
I like the convenience of using the factory filter...unscrew the filter, pop the old one out, pop the new one in, and screw the filter back on. AND, the new filter I put in is guaranteed CLEAN!
Price wise, over the life of the truck, it may cost me a couple of hundred dollars more to use clean factory filters, but that's worth it to me!!
These engines go 200-300,000 miles using the factory filters. I don't think you can do much better than that!!
An other small concern should be warranty. This type of filter may not meet Ford's specifications. Think about this: If a factory filter goes bad and damages the engine, I'd think warranty would be covered. If this filter goes bad, I think you'd be on your own.
Bottom line:
Pro's:
1) Save a few bucks over the life of the truck.
2) Trick mod...something to talk about
2 1/2) Environmentally friendly...or is it?? You're still required by law to properly dispose of the oil and filtered gunk!! (Flushed down the sink doesn't cut it!)
Con's:
1) Messy.
2) Requires you have a place to work on it...kitchen sink??
3) Requires you have cleaning products...solvent, soap, whatever.
4) Time consuming...turns a 10 minute job into 1/2 - 1 hour.
5) If you don't do your own oil changes, how is the shop or dealership going to do it?
6) No guaranty that it's clean when you put it back in.
7) Could void your engine warranty.

I am gonna have to agree on this one. I seams like a better deal to keep using the OEM filters and dispose of them in a proper manner. I found the filter set up in Diesel Power magazine, and figured someone might find it to be a neat item to add to there vehicle, but I realize it might be more work/trouble then it's really worth. Thanks for the insight Samuel.Originally Posted by Samuel1941

I was talking to the Ford diesel tech this weekend, and he was saying this is a good idea, but not a good solution. After reading the previous posts, I will stay OEM.

Here's some benefits.

Sounds pretty easy to clean get a can of brake cleaner just spray it off and it dries quickly reinstall.
I reuse the factory Motorcraft filters 4-5 times before I put a new one in. I wash the filter each oil change with Gunk degreaser, blow it off with an air hose, and it cleans up great. I only put a new filter in when the old one's filter material seems to be getting frayed from cleaning with the stiff brush.
I think that Ford only tells you to use a new filter because they want the money. It's like a t-shirt, when the shirt gets dirty, you wash it, you don't throw it away! You only replace the shirt when it gets frayed or worn.
I like the Life Time Filter, but for the money, I'll stick with the factory filters.
Spoken like a true rocket scientist....![]()

I'm with you as far as the price goes but it will save you money in the long run. Some of the things I think makes this filter better is its ability to filter down to 10 microns your OEM filter can't do one more thing is it can filter twice the oil flow before it goes in to bypass. I think it is a good product and just giving you my opinion. I am not a salesman or giving you a sales pitch if nobody wants it thats fine with me just thought it was worth a try.
