    Locked up the rear

with a Detroit Locker that is. I was slightly worried that it would drive like the detroit I had in my short wheelbase jeep, but the long truck and auto trans make it quite ok to have a auto locker like the detroit in it.

I can get up and go around right hand turns even after rolling thru some water. The open diff I had was not cutting it. A limited slip was under consideration, but they wear out and really didn't cost much less than the locker. Some side effects, but I'm gonna try one of my 4x4 proving grounds tomorrow and drive it across a rut to see if it gets stuck.

    Re: Locked up the rear

Drove up the hard section of my secret north nounty 4x4 proving grounds with the new locker. This is the second time I had it in low range. The first time was embarassing with the open differential. Got through the rutted and rocky uphill section on the second try which is about as good as my jeep. Much harder to turn around though.

Sorry, no pics with the truck but here is a pic of the hill from last spring:
    hill 1
    hill 2
... I'll do it again with a photographer, it was fun.

Got a steep hillclimb in San Diego to do, but I might get bigger tires first.

Ok,...Actual vehicle off road pics this time. Check out the rear tire locked and spinning in the last photo with the wheel stuffed. Now I need to do something with those ridiculous 235/85-16's.

That looks like fun! But I think I would rather bring my dirt bike. It would fly up that without even breathing hard.

    Re: Locked up the rear

That's just a test area not too far from my house near lake hodges (not trespassing). it's a quarter mile utility access road. There is another spot that has a longer hill down in San Diego. The area known as black mountain is getting developed and they used to tolerate motorcycles and trucks, but now they will enforce the no trespassing on the park reserve portion. Too bad because that is a real cool mountain to climb on. I had to hide for 1/2 hour with my lights off waiting for the law to leave before I could come back down one night. I haven't been back, I got the hint. The security for all the recent construction called 'em out. I didn't think the crown vics they brought out were any threat. Boredom or another call came in and they skeedaddled. Funnything, after I came down out of hiding about 4 other trucks appeared. gotta head for the hills or the desert nowadays. They want to keep vehicles off natural areas to protect the anima... so they can bulldoze it later and pave it.

Maybe we should see, informally, who wants to make a trip out to a SoCal OHV area or to the sand or something. Maybe I'll bring my jeep.
