    Oil leak

I have an oil leak that appears to come from the back of the oil pan right in the starter area. Nothing large but needs to be looked at...any body have a similar leak?

    Re: Oil leak

the valley in the 7.3 block has a big drain hole that dumps on the passenger side back kind of down the top of the trans. any leak up ther will kind of follow the block casting down by the starter and tq converter cover.

get a can of brake cleaner and spray clean the valley area to see what's leaking wet after a test drive.

    how much of a leak?

    I had a similar leak!!!!!

This leak fooled me. What i thought was from that area was from the high preasure oil pump on top of the motor in front of fuel filter. The oil lines for the fuel rail began to leak at the fittings. It just so happens to have a drain path leads to that exact same area.

    Re: Oil leak

Most of the leaks I have seen are just the valve cover gaskets coming loose from vibration.

You just take them off wipe them and the head off and reinstall.

    Re: Oil leak

Well I've looked close and the leak appears to be around the HPOP....It'll go into Tuttle Ckick tomorrow early am and I'll keep everyone posted. I would prefer to take it to Sunrise but if it is as minor as I think it is I'll chance it. Bobby...Sunrise needs another store here in Orange County!!

    Re: Oil leak

Well I just had an oil leak on Tuesday. So I took it to the dealer and 2 high presure oil lines were the cause. They fixed it, I picked it up Friday morning and I drove it to work. Friday night noticed an oil spot under it again at my girlfriends house. Leaking again same spot. Can't really tell where but I can tell that it is coming from between the engine and trans. Checked the oil and I was 2Qts low. Filled it up and drove it home then Sat morning dropped it off at the dealer again. We'll see what they have to say this time.

Hope you leak is fixed better than mine was.

    Re: Oil leak

I hate to admit it, but this is the very reason I registered here (to see how prevelent this oil leak was). Mine started just after towing my camp trailer home (300 miles). I took it in to a Utah dealer (LaPoint Ford) and was told it was the HPOP lines leading to the turbo. They said it was fixed and sent me on my way.

Two days later, I noticed a smaller leak start again. I couldn't get an appt. with LaPoint for another two days and by then it was leaking worse than the first time. To top it off, now after I've driven the truck for more than 20 mins (after the turbos kicked in a few times), and turn the engine off, I can hear the turbo fan winding down and it sounds like somebody dropped a rock, or bolt into it, or I have a bad bearing. When I took it into the dealer, I couldn't recreate the sound, of course, but they did tell me the turbo itself was a new upgrade the previous owner must have installed... Kinda makes me worried I bought a used lemon and maybe it was traded in for a reason?

The dealer has it again and I'll post an update when they update me. Otherwise, has anyone else had a similar noise/oil leak combo?

    Re: Oil leak

Got the truck back from the dealer the 2nd time. The tech said that he was very depressed that he didn't double check that the lot boy cleaned the oil off my engine and remember to fill up my oil. My oil leak the 2nd time was the left over oil that was around the place that the leak was and that is why it was splattered. The reason I was 1/2 gallon low was becasue they didn't fill me back up after fixing it. Got it home and now for a couple days there is no leak. Hope it stays that way.

    Re: Oil leak

the 7.3 valley can really hold a lot of oil. it might take an extra day or so for it to cook off and run out.

    Re: Oil leak

I got mine back from the dealer. They said it was the rear-main this time. The couldn't duplicate the turbo noise though. They said they pulled it, inspected it, and saw no chipped blades and the fan spins fine. The wife's convinced we bought an expensive lemon though. Two oil leaks in two weeks, add in the turbo problem... Next fix will be trading it in on a new F150 if she has her way.

    Re: Oil leak

I had my truck back for one whole day before it started leaking again (dripping from the same spot, off the tranny inspection cover).

I went back to the dealer, pissed as $%@!, and when they looked at the leak, they actually laughed (which pissed me off more). They said they couldn't believe it, but it was leaking from a totally different spot. This time they blame the high pressure oil pump itself. They said they couldn't get me (or the part) in until just two days ago, but they're not charging me the deductable and are paying for a rental.

Has anyone ever heard of ANY engine developing three unrelated leaks in a time span of less than one month? I've had old Jeeps with AMC engines in them that I'd never believe that of.

I think the dealer is just doing some sloppy work and hasn't ever fixed it right in the first place. The bummer about that is that the team leader of the team assigned to it is my friend. And he assured me he "has his best diesel guy on it".

You'll all probably hunt me down and hang me after saying this, but I'm actually starting to think I'd be better off with a Dodge or Chev...

    Any help, please!

    -Chad
