    AMP Power Step install tips

So how many of the AMP step buyers did the install themselves and can you say about how long it took?

I am confident wrenching but I seem to have less and less time to do things lately with the little peeps biting my ankles. Just trying to figure if it is an all day thing or a few hours, or just break down and have someone else do it.

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Any AMP buyers do there own install?

i did my own over the weekend,VERY easy. all the wiring is already in harneses and ready to go. all you have to do is splice in to each doors "door open"sensor. the wiring diagram is easy to understand. the rest is just bolting the arms and steps to the truck. it took me about 2 hours taking my time.

Re: Any AMP buyers do there own install?

I just put my new AMP research steps on this Saturday.
It was easy for the most part, but getting the wires thru the accordian part between the drivers door was a real pain, and I have small fingers!
The other problems we ran into were:
in the drivers door there are two yellow with black (they look the same) and in the rear door connection it says to cut the green with yellow and they do mention that there are two, although with that they tell you to cut the dull yellow, but on mine that was wrong, cut the bright yellow.

All in all it took about 3.5 - 4 hours, but that was also butting the wrong wires back together and testing. If you do it all right it should take about 3 hours, my guess.

Re: Any AMP buyers do there own install?

I helped TruckChick put her steps on this weekend.
The steps are good quality and the kit is well done.
The other problems we ran into were:

Also, the mounting brackets on the passenger side had to be trimmed at the top to fit (instructions say to trim on the Excursion, but this truck required it).

I'd give the instructions that came with the steps/kit a B grade. They're good, but you have to guess at a couple of things.

The steps are completely hidden when the doors are closed. Then, when you open a door, you hear a faint motor turn on and the steps unfold from under the truck kind'a like space ship stuff.

Re: Any AMP buyers do there own install?

I Installed Groundhogs and was a piece of cake. I enjoyed cutting someone elses wires and stuff.... Tearing the door panel off and feeding the wire through the tube. All in all, was fun. The outcome was the best of all...

I forgot to mention the time it took. With 6-10 beer breaks it was about 5 hours.

Re: Any AMP buyers do there own install?

Additional info on the Amp Steps install:

I had to contact Amp Research regarding a connector that wasn't working like it should (works, but doesn't lock...no big deal, they are sending replacement). I mentioned the having to trim the mount, and the guy said that Ford stuff varies...don't we already know that!!

And, I mentioned that there were two wires the same color inside the door and that I had to guess which one was the correct one to use. The guy laughed and said, yeah, we know and there are also two of the same color in the door floor panel and you have to guess which one to use there also!! (Note: On the initial cut, I guessed wrong on both of them!!)

I post this just to give anyone who is doing the install the info so they don't think they are doing it wrong or losing their mind!!!

Added bit of trivia...the steps are listed as good to a 350 pound load, and the guy says they have tested them to 1000 pounds and they support it.

Re: Any AMP buyers do there own install?

Just got mine installed last Friday. The mechnical part of the install was very easy except I had to trim the mounting brackets for the motor. As far as the electrical part of the install, I ditched all the butt connectors and went with soldering and heat-shrink sleves. I never trust those butt connectors. I was very lucky trying to find those door latch wirings on the driver side. Both wires were found on the first try. Total installation time was around 5 hours by myself including upgrade butt connectors to soldering.

Here is a nice "How To" article for installing the Amp Steps. It gives a "Step by Step" (pun intended) with pictures.

Bumping this thread up to the top. Wondering if anyone that has done this is willing to help me install this on my 2003 f250 longbed. I actually bought these steps from Richard (Line x of CV) and havent had time to install it.

Anyone willing to help for beer and food?

Raul is a baby and thinks these are too much of a pain to install and thinks I should pay for someone else to install. I think Ill try and install them first, and when things go bad, then bring it to a shop. haha. (Just kidding Raul)
