Red Racer spawns Orange County Diesel
I and several of our members have been having lots of fun modifying, customizing, and racing the Red Racer. It’s gotten us interested in all of this to the extent that we have decided to start a Ford diesel performance business.
We envision 2 main goals for the business:
1) R & D and sales of performance parts
2) A place for SoCAPS members to hang out
I’ll explain both in more detail.
R & D and sales - We will focus primarily on the 6.0/Torqueshift combo. With everybody and his brother selling modules/chips, exhaust and intakes, we will steer clear of this for the most part. We will, however, get involved with tranny programming. Our focus will be on parts like turbos, heads, head gaskets & studs, trans upgrade kits, TC’s, injectors, and possibly pistons, rods, and cams. We will also market Gene’s wonder cutter. In other words, we will sell the same frame shortening, etc. that Gene has done to the Red Racer. Gene has had lots of inquiries about this. We already have a great outlet for customers to pick out a new PSD (Bobby). Steve will be selling his Billet Badges with us as well.
The objective is to use the Red Racer as a platform for R & D and then sell the products once we have proven their viability. A lot of help and ideas in R & D will come from John Wood, who will have a big part in all of this. Roger (IDK) has been working on a set of heads for the Red Racer that should be ready soon. Hopefully we can recruit his expertise. Gene and Steve will obviously be involved with this, and anybody else who wants to give ideas or suggestions are more than welcome.
We will have a shop in Orange County, probably in Lake Forest. In the shop we will have a dyno, a lift, and a complete set of tools.
SoCAPS hangout - The other goal of all this is to give a place for SoCAPS members to have impromptu gatherings. I see Friday night or Saturday gatherings where members show up to chat, see what’s going on, or make use of the dyno or lift. While we plan on making a successful business out of this, we'd also like a place where we can all hang out and shoot the bull about our PSD’s.

P.S. - One of the reasons I’m posting this is that we need one or two people who would like to work here full time. The person or persons should have knowledge of diesel performance parts and an ability to deal with the public. The position would require phone and internet sales and the capability to basically run the place. I currently have a business in Lake Forest that I need to continue to spend time at, but I will probably spend 2 or 3 days a week at the diesel shop. PM me if you’re interested in such a position.
