    Front License Plate

Is there anyone who does not have a front license plate? Here's why I ask. It looks like the front license plate restricts air across the bottom of the radiator and transmassion cooler. I've also noted that many cars and trucks do not display a front license plate. I know there is a law that requires the front plate but it seems not to be enforced. What say you all?

CVC 5200 (must have a front plate)

I have a snap on plate that I put on my winch mount when driving in the city. (uses some "D" maglite clips to snap on the roller fairlead)

    Re: Front License Plate

I ran my last vehicle without the front plate for 5 years. Got stopped twice. First time got a fix it ticket. Second time, I showed that I had the plate with me and received a warning. For the fix it ticket, you bolt it back on, have it signed off. No cost other than time.
I have been thinking about doing the same as you for the same reason. Recently saw a photo of a plate where the stock bracket was removed and re-installed upside down to lower the whole thing below the opening that the plate seems to block when stock.

All that being said, I wonder if removing the plate and bracket would actullly lower the temps.

    Re: Front License Plate

I haven't run a front license plate on any vehicle I have owned since 1976. I have had only 1 fix it ticket and I received 1 violation at Castaic Lake about 4 years ago for not having one. Now when I go there I just place my ft plate in the ft windshield. If an officer writes you up for missing your ft plate, either he is really bored or you really pi$$ed him off. The rent a cops at Castaic figured out a way to increase revenue by writing no plate tickets.

    Re: Front License Plate

    Ticket info........

Fix it tickets are now at least $10. Government charges a fee to inspect that you have corrected the violation.

Also note, more emphasis is being placed on enforce of the front plate code section because the new red light violation cameras take a picture of you and your front plate to mail you the citation. So law enforcement is being instructed to write more front plate violations.

(How do I know this?? Retired after 32 years in Law Enforcement...still got some connections.)

I've also read (as Burger noted above) that some how turning your bracket upside down will give you the air clearance you need. Haven't done it, don't know the details.

My front plate and rear plate are at home in a drawer right where I like them..It just isn't as new when you put plates on... I figure I will put a rear and a rear only if I get some personal plates.

    Josh,

I am with you 100%. In the past 5 years I have had 5 different trucks and have never put the plates on. But, now that I have personalized plates it all makes sence.

When I repaired my front bumper I somehow forgot to put on the front plate. It looks so much better without it. Plus the city is putting up all those red light camera's everywhere.

    Re: Front License Plate

I have a 97 so there is no issue with airflow, however there are a lot of red light camera revenue machines in San Diego so I don't have it. I don't worry about being ticketed for not having it because all my paperwork is up to date and I don't do drugs so I never have a guilty concience about anything. The machines are going back online soon (its been more than a year that they have been off) after the lawsuits against yellow light interval changing to boost violation revenue.

Did you notice that here in SD most of the photo units are for left turn lanes and not for public safety which would more likely be for the straight thru runners. All directions are stopped for the green arrow left turners, and if you slide a couple of extra cars past the red, nobody gets T-boned. More people run the left because they aren't afraid of getting hit. It's all about revenue generation and maybe 10% about safety. I saw a car get rearended because somebody locked em up trying to stop for the yellow.

So anyways... No plate on the front.

    Re: Front License Plate

The only time I have had a front plate on any car that I have ever owned was when going to get a fix it ticket signed off and then off it goes. Once I had it attached with zip ties the officer was a bit leary but it was secure so he still signed it... Until about 15 minutes later when I cut it off. I guess the bottom line is that I think front plates are ugly.
