    Can I get a affordable pre-1998 F450/F550 PSD extracab 4x4 dually

I'm all excited about getting a Truck Camper rig going & I'm dealing with weight issues & such & so I'm starting to realize if I can afford a bigger rig it will handle the weight.
I plan to get a big heavy Truck Camper with a slide out & thats heavy...
    So I'm thinking a bigger 4X4 dually..

Can you guys hook me up with some good info on these bigger rigs?

It must be a pre-1998 Diesel because I dont wanna deal with smog test.

A pre-1998 F450/F550 PSD extracab 4x4 dually does not exist. You'll only find that setup in a 99+ truck. I wouldn't worry about the smog and the extra $80 for the test compared to registering a F450 or F550. Technically anything above a 11,500 GVWR and weighs more than 8,001 lbs. unloaded needs to have weight stickers (pricey) and have a $750k insurance policy. Then you need a motor carrier permit. Or you could stay under the radar... A F350 dually should be enough of a truck to handle the weight you want to haul. I believe they have a 5,500lb payload capacity.

Funny I was telling my wife tonight about how once you move up to a 450+ its not average consumer anymore & becomes more commercial Yet your reply is a wake up call to me about what I told her.... :(

So your saying anything above a F350 becomes an issue?

Not so much of an issue but if you do everything by the books there are more cost to keep it on the road vs. a F350. I'm sure you already have a 1 million or greater insurance policy you can put the truck on so insuring it shouldn't cost to much. A 15K weight sticker is $332 and a 26K is in the $546 and anything above 26K you'll need a class A licensce. Then you'll need a motor carriers permit and to top it off you have to stop at the scales. It sucks because I was looking into work trucks because I could find nice service bed 450's ans 550's for under $9K but to insure and register I was looking at $4000 a year. For me it was the insurance that made it expensive but I only have a 300K policy but I would at least need a 750K policy by law to drive the truck. But I see and know people that put pickup beds on 450s and 550s and register them like a regular 1 ton and have no problems. Just make sure no one drives the truck through the scales and gets it flagged. Thats how our work truck got caught :(.

I suppose you could always replace the 450/550 badge with a 350 & the Scale house wouldn't think about the truck, & FYI I already have my Class A lic. :D
