    DEF funnel

I understand spilling DEF on the paint is a no no. Is there a special funnel that should be used to prevent this?

Here is a "stupid question". What is DEF, could you explain the system, I know I'm not the only one.
'97 Dodge 3500, Club Cab, 4x4, Dually, 5.9 Cummins 12V, SMOG EXEMPT, 4" turbo back, gauges, EGR Delete. Built Auto with billet twin disk converter, TransGo shift kit, HF clutches, HD Sprag, PML Pan, AFE stage 1, 100 fuel plate, AFC full forward. 3000 GSK.

Yes, my last truck was an '06 Superduty, liked it, just too much money to own, SMOG, register, build, and maintain.

DEF is a urea-based chemical reactant designed specifically for use in SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) systems to reduce NOx emissions.

DEF is no big deal at all !!! Pickups have a 5 gallon tank, chassis cabs have a 6 gallon tank. On average you will use 1 gallon per 1,000 miles, so with that said, you should top it off at service intervals. When the system senses 900 miles to empty it will show a message in the dash. Each time the ignition is cycled it will show the remaining mileage left. At 100 miles to empty the truck will go into "limp" mode and at 0 miles to empty the truck will remain in an idle state until DEF is added.

I have yet to hear of a single situation where a customer was NOT able to find DEF within 900 miles. I get mine at the Pilot Truck Stop in Hesperia. Most truck stop have DEF at the pump like diesel fuel on the big rig side. DEF can also be purchased just about everywhere now such as places like NAPA and Wal Mart!

Thanks Bobby. I was curious about that system on the new trucks.

Why was the funnel question "stupid"?

I realized It may have been stupid when I viewed a youtube video showing a ordinary long shaped funnel used. If any DEF is spilled on the paint; wipe it off immediately with a clean wet rag. I also thought it may have been stupid when no one responded right away. Further investigation revealed Motorccraft does provide an overflow prevention funnel with their one gallon containers of DEF. I retracted too soon.

When I top off my DEF it is always at home. I just have my garden hose at the truck, with the water on. I always have a 2 1/2 gallon jug of DEF at home and when the info center says it is below 1/2 I throw it in. I never let it run real low. For some reason it always burps the last few ounces out, so I screw on the filler cap and immediately turn the hose on the whole area to was the DEF off the truck. ---- If you was it off immediately there is no harm.

@ Richard - The reason why I don't get it at the dealership is for the sole reason that the Pilot Truck Stop within a couple miles of my house has it at the pump, which makes it very easy to "top off" when I get fuel.
