    CARB legal Chip?

I am considering buying the F5 DP Tuner with a 40HP tow and a 80HP tune. I am concerned about passing smog tests. Are there any good chips that are smog legal (have EO numbers)? I want to tow more with my 2001 F350 and want to increase the power> I have the gauges but need a chip, 4” pipes and an improved air box but don’t want to make the smog check a major hassle. Recommendations?

Jody does have his chips on the list for the EO. Just get any chip you want and when it comes time to smog the truck, either put the chip in the stock setting, or just remove it for the test.

Unless I'm mistaken, the list is no longer valid - since June of this year.

All chips and tuners are legal, if you pull them out before smog test!

Thats what I will probably do. It looks like Banks has some chips that are legal but it sounds like DP is a better choice. How much work is it to pull the chip before test?

Well you don't need to pull the chip at all. DP Tuner chips come with a stock setting on all of them. Set it to the stock number on the F5 controller and get tested. But if you want to remove the chip anyways, it takes 10 minutes at the most.

Good point. If the chip and related components are not removed, it will probably be very important to hide them so the smog technician has no reason to think you have a chip. The program selector switch needs to be pulled or hidden. Has anyone had the digital switch on their truck draw the attention of the technician? I need a clever way to easily remove the switch or hide it and yet still have it be easily assessable when driving and not heading in for a smog test.

Mount the controller with velcro. When you get it tested, just pull it off and tuck it under the steering column.

If you remove the chip make sure you drive it for a while before smogging it. It will throw a P1000 code, which you won't know about (because it doesn't throw any lights on the dash) but the smog computer will catch and fail you for.

    aekrogh:
I heard that about going to another dealer. I just worry that down in a few years the smog techs will become smarter on waht to look for

n4tecguy: how long do you need to drive it before the P1000 code is cleared? If you use a code reader and do a "clear all codes", will that clear a P1000?

Not sure on diesels, but on gassers usually I drive them for 2-3 days or 100 miles, whichever is greater. Code readers won't clear P1000, in fact when you clear the codes it sets another P1000.

With the chip in the stock setting, it is just that. Stock. Nothing can happen. Just put the controller in a hidden place if you are worried about it being detected.

I just had my X smogged over the weekend. Have a DP Tuner running in 80Econ most of the time and an AFE Intake/Exhaust as well.I set the tune to stock then removed it. Also removed the CCV as I was venting to the rear of the truck. And it passed just fine. Boy did it suck driving in stock mode that whole time to/from the testing place! And I set no codes as mentioned above. Perhaps this is related to gassers....?
