    Need advice

My check engine light came on two days ago revealing code P0299. What is this and how important is fixing it to the smooth running of my diesel? Drivablity is same after engine light came on.
    Thank you

P0299 is turbo underboost. Are you seeing low boost on the gauge? maybe loss of power? The vanes could be sticking. Are you still under Warranty?

Rancho Ford in Temecula diagnosed it to mean a Biased EBP (Exhaust Back-Pressure) Sensor needs to be replaced. Cost: $353.52. I didn't know the 6.0 had an EBP Sensor. Did they see me coming or what!!!

I would say 95% of p0299 codes are from unison ring rusted to the turbo center housing. I would recommend to recondition turbo. At my shop would be just under 300.00 to remove turbo clean housing unison rings vanes and vgt. Your truck does have an EBP sensor but is not likely to be the cause of your p0299 code. If you need any further assistance let me know.

Hello domesticdiesel> Thank you for your reply. The next day after getting my truck back from Rancho Ford the check engine light returned and I returned to Rancho Ford. This time Rancho Ford determined it was a turbo failure. I am disappointed and poorer that it was misdiagnosed the first time. I own an Extracare ESP from Ford and a new turbo is included in that coverage - not the EBP sensor. This is the third turbo in 75000 miles. I change the oil with Motorcraft synthetic every 5,000 miles and use Motorcraft diesel additive at every fuel stop. I baby this truck. What can I do in terms of preventive maintenance to preclude these turbo failures??

domesticdiesel: Just got my truck back from Rancho Ford. You were correct in suggesting unison ring rusted to the turbo center housing. Rancho replaced CHRA and unison ring 'CHRA rusted beyond repair'. Rancho Ford service manager explained replacing the EBP sensor was a first step in troubleshooting a fault code P0299. I'm happy to say Rancho Ford made a generous offer to settle my grievance. Thanks again for your reply - you were right on the money.

Its the Ford reman turbo that is the cuase of repeat failures. As a dealer tech I have seen turbos bad out of the box. All you can do is make sure you have the latest calibration as the new calibration has an update for cycling of vgt to help prevent it from sticking. Also these turbos dont like to be parked for extended periods of time. Make sure you drive it a few times a week that will help prevent rust and corrosion building up on unison ring and center housing. As for the miss diagnosis I think that you should request a refund for the ebp sensor parts and labor.

Thanks again domesticdiesel. I am satisfied with Rancho Ford's solution. Since their repair the turbo does not rattle when I let off the accelerator. Prior to repair this was a constant annoyance. I assume it is a symptom of turbo under boost.
