    02 shut down issue

My wifes 02 Excursion shut down on her the other day. She was driving down the street and it shut off. It has 137k on it all the maintenance is done on time. This is the first problem with her truck since we bought it 6 years ago, I hate to think that run is over. Her truck is bone stock other than a K&N filter and Gibson muffler added by the previous owner.

I did some reading here and have replaced the CPS, Fuel pump relay, and Injector relay. I also read about the IPR and will be cleaning that this weekend, $380 for a new one ouch.

After her problems I'll be looking at my truck as well and doing some preventive replacement of parts on mine as well.

Am I missing anything else? I'd rather spend the money here rather than on the side of the road somewhere.

Probably should add it would crank over with no issue just wouldn't fire. Then after 20 minute it fired. She didn't check the tach to see if it was moving so the CPS replacement was preventive.

I would bet you a bunch of money it was the CPS!!
Exact symptom! I had replaced the CPS on both my 7.3's due to engine shutting off!

I wouldn't do any more parts replacement until it happens again...because it probably won't happen again with the new CPS! :)

That's what I'm hoping. I went ahead and replaced it on my truck also, I spoke to the guy I bought it from and he had never done it in 206k. The relays were cheap and I just threw them in the spares box just in case.

    Thanks

Well no start on her truck again this morning. NO tach function either, Heading to ford for an OEM sensor.

Well after two days of messing around with her truck the wife appears to be back on the road again. It turned out not to be the CPS, I found after going through all of the engine controls that the $12 EEC relay was faulty. Found it doing some random relay swapping as a last resort before sending the truck to Ford. I pulled it apart after swapping it out(and the truck started) and it was badly burned. So hopefully that will solve her problem. At least I know the CPS" in both trucks are good now. LOL

Well on the continuing saga of the wife's truck. It died on me the other day and wouldn't restart. After a day of messing around with it I called for the hook and shipped it to HB Ford today, see if they can find the ghost under the hood.

Sounds like maybe a short somewhere that probably blew the relay in the first place. Good luck....let us know what they find.

Ok after months trouble and unreliability with this truck we "think' we have found the solution.

It went to ford 4 times and they were unwilling to do what it took to actually solve the issue..drive the damn thing till it quit. I offered to pay the guy to drive it home(I never expect anyone to work for free) and to lunch and still they were unwilling to do it.Finaly I got ahold of a friend that would loan me a scan tool so I could pull codes and look at the engine while it was running. Low and behold the truck had the issue and threw a code, not sure why Ford couldn't find it in one of it's 4 visits there.

The long and the short is the PCM appears to be the culprit and is on order thru Ford.

If you're thinking about taking your older diesel to HB Ford...rethink. I had a very bad experience. Just my .02.

What was the code that makes you think it was the PCM? $$$.$$ ouch.

Yup it threw a PCM code. We cleared it and it came back three times. . Checked it out with a friend that works for a ford dealer in Texas he confirmed it. We also removed the Banks System to make sure that wasn't the problem. We have exhausted every other option to this point. To date I have checked the engine harness across the valve cover, replaced the IPR, the CPS, all relays, and run the truck around with a scan tool on it for a week waiting for it to die so we could run our checks.

The last option was the PCM. It wasn't as much as I thought it would be, I got the PCM for under $500 from Ford then I just have to have them flash it since they are VIN specific. All in all I should be less than $650. Not bad considering I was expecting the PCM alone to cost over a grand.

There is still no guarentee that this is the problem but with it throwing a PCM code it's the best educated guess at this point after exhausting the other most probable causes

HELLO Jeepnut, just wondering if u found out your problem,i own 4 7.3s n i got a 02 450 with this exact problem,in all other casses we switched out the crank senser n problem solved on this 02 that didnt make a diffrence,we changed all breakers no diff,we switched out the PCM(i gota used one n it works) n no diff, rooled out fuel(no prob with fuel suply), i cheaked all conctions n wires all good went as far as taken out feus panle n inspected all is good,

heres wat its doing, starts right up drives 100% for 10to30 min n it shuts off no sputtering, go to start it it turns over 100% but wont fire, leave it for 15 to 45 min n fires up n goes like nothing happened at all for a nother 15 to 20 when it dose it again n again....

That was kind of the same senario that I went through with hers, it would be running fine then just shut down, she would let it sit and call me by the time I got there it would usually fire. I began having the same issue a couple months later. I have an 02 f250 with a 7.3L also

We actually found multiple problems with both of our trucks. They both turned out to be the same base issue, the wiring to the IPR, Both harness connectors to the IPR were loose and causing the the engine to shut down. I actually found the problem on mine first, after a day of playing around with different things and being frustrated at the dealer that did nothing but charge me for diagnostic time and found nothing(HB Ford). The wifes truck was running fine at that time.

I had the truck running and just started pulling on wires, I pulled on the IPR harness and the truck shut down, I pushed on it and the truck refired. I did that several times to verify the issue and the cause. I replaced the IPR and the harness and no problems with it since. I did the same to the wifes truck and have been problem free there as well.

On my truck I have also replaced the PCM with a brand new unit from Ford ($478) and the CPS(international unit). I have also had the Banks chips reflashed. We were able to use the one I had ordered for her truck originally and never used.

Her truck has had the CPS(international unit) replaced ,the IPR, and IPR wiring harness replaced.

Through the process on both trucks I found OC Diesel ( now Buds Diesel) in Mission Viejo extremly helpful. After being screwed over at the dealer I went to them for diagnostic help(I don't have a reader or scan tool) and advice. They were professional very easy to work with and treated us very well. I can't say enough about Bud and his crew. I would recommend them to anyone... anytime.
