    2001 Ford f250 V8

So my in-laws decided to get a 2001 Ford f250 with the v8. They need a truck to transport to and from home depot and such and also have a plow for plowing snow up in big bear area. Its the extended cab with the suicide rear doors. has the bench seats up front, and is 4x4.

They had some engine trouble, and had some head work, with new head gaskets and some other things done. Then as the mechanic went to start it, it ran for about a min, then it seized. THey are in the process of pulling the motor.

I already called sunrise and for a remanufactured long block for the v8, its $2800. Mechanic wants to charge 22 hours of labor for the replacement.

    Here are my questions

    1) If they decide to not fix the motor, what can they sell just the truck with no motor for ? Bed is beat up from previous owner throwing stuff in there. has manual 4x4 shifter on the floor. Bench seat.

    2) Does anyone know of a place with a used v8 motor to swap in?

    3) Does anyone know a shop that can do the work for cheap?

That sounds fishy to me new head gaskets ran for about a min, then it seized. I would like to know if a cylinder filled with water?

Its the v8.. im assuming 5.4l?

Well my in laws are not paying for the head work.

So we're just waiting for the shop to tell us what they figure out after tearing the whole thing apart. But once there is this much damage, what is the reliability of the motor even if certain parts are repaired.

5.4's are good motors, but I don't know about doing very much plowing with one.

not really serious plowing. They have a 100 ft driveway and rather than pay someone else to do it, they wanted to do it themselves. And just in case someone gets stuck, they want to be able to get them out. Not looking for serious power. Think they found a small plow, like 300 lbs or so, so its a small plow.

Hoping this engine issue can be solved relatively cheap though.

the 5.4 is fine if your not making a living out of plowing with it. Just put it in low and go easy on it. It's not a beast of a motor like the diesels can be.

Hey bob, yeh they arent going to do this as a business, but rather than pay someone to plow their driveway every time it snows, they just wanted to to their own.

You seem to know alot of the junkyards... any idea if they would have a good 5.4 motor?

Yeah, there is a domestics only yard by my house. I'll pass by when I head back out. 22hrs to do a motor swap? $65+ an hr x 22 = $1400 seems like a lot to me just for labor. To bad I don't have my shop anymore I'd happily do that swap for them.

well basically hes jsut trying to make back what he lost in the head job. Im sure there are other shops that can do it in much less time. He said most shops charge 100 an hour, but he will only charge 50 an hour. So thats not terrible, but 22 hours is alot.

If they decide to go with a reman engine, ill definately consider just getting a tow truck and hauling it to another shop.

If you can take a look and see what they have, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If people were willing to do that, that would be a sweet christmas / 30 year anniversary present to my inlaws.

Not to give everyone a sob story, but they had one of their rental property homes up near big bear burn down on thanksgiving day last year. They are still dealing with the new bank, shady contractors, etc, to rebuild and this is just adding to their list of troubles. Also this month is their 30 year wedding anniversary. My wife and i were going to send them away on vacation, but they didnt want to be away because of the fire last year. They bought this truck in hopes that only small repairs were needed so they can get a plow and have their rental area clean for the renters this winter.

I should be getting some updates from them today on what the mechanic found out after tearing the motor apart. Hope to have not so bad news.

    Thanks.

Sorry I wasn't able to pass by the dismantler, I kept getting tights schedules to be everywhere today. Odd but I hate days like today. I usually have plenty of time between in the day.
