DMV weight fees

Hey everyone. Does anyone know how to get around the DMV weight fee. I have a line on a shell and it makes my truck look like an Excursion. I like the fact that I can lock stuff up in my bed.

Do I go to the DMV and ask them? If I get it rated for noncommercial then I will not take the shell off. Thanks for any info.

When I tried to do this at the DMV when the inspector came out, they did not like the fact that there was no seating with seat belts for passengers, or there was no sleeping setup/kitchen/bathroom areas.
