    EGR Block off Questions

I have a 2004 6.0 and im tring to block off the egr valve. I read the Diesel power magazin about how to do this upgrade, but im still a little confused because i thought you could just block off the exhaust flow and not have to worry about the cooling system. Can some one clear this up for me?

you can just block off the exhaust flow and it will be alright. if the cooler is possibly cracked deleting the cooler should stop coolant lose and help from puking. mine was just blocked off but i think my cooler was cracked so i welded it all up.

Putting in the block off plate is like putting a bandage on a gunshot wound. The EGR cooler system is made of stainless steel and it heats fast and transfers heat even faster. With the exhaust blocked it is still bolted together with the very hot up pipe and will heat up almost as hot as when it was connected with exhaust gases. Some people have had good luck with the block off plate but some don't. If you have warranty on your truck you should not do this mod as it will more than likely cancel it if you ever take it to the dealer. Here is how I did mine.

Here are the pieces cut off the EGR cooler and welded back together for the heater hose

I don't have a pic of the exhaust pipe block off but I also make it out of the old EGR cooler

If you want to do this you can get an EGR cooler off ebay and send it to me and I will make you up a kit.

That is what I'm looking for right there. Great pics gene. I didn't tackle this, this weekend. I just want to make sure about the smog deal first. But that gave me really good idea what to look for. Great pics.
Big thanks to Bud and Matt for getting me back on the road!

I have the block off plate and it has worked for me. Keep in mind I have studs and a new oil cooler so that probably helps. If I had the money and time to keep my truck down I would call first coast d iesel perf.

It's great to finally be on the socaps forum. I'm only a year late on this topic. Hopefully this gets read and some can comment.

Bud @ OC Diesel did alot of work on my truck, he is great. He preferred to install the "new" EGR Cooler, instead of the delete, for sake of the upcoming CA Smog requirements. I missed the socaps meeting at his grand opening last year, sorry.

I am looking at installing the blocking "disk" for the time being, to stop the soot from entering & clogging up the intake. But that doesn't solve the heat issue. CA Smog check is still too new to completely delete it, no? It seems you guys have done your work and have some beautiful rigs.

It appears that this topic is valid here, and can be freely discussed. My topics were banned on another forum (d-stop), regardless of discussion in both off-road and normal forums; last time I ever go to that crappy site.

Does anyone have any experience installing the blocking disc? I removed the fender "shield" to play with the horns, and try and get a view of the up-pipe to EGR Cooler connection, but couldn't really see how it can be easily done. I read somewhere (here I think) of someone doing it in less than 3 hours through the passenger side fender.
