trying to get the darn thing out! Well i got it out using a large pry bar and a big vice grip

Eww! Look at this nasty thing

    Third Step:
Cleaning! Sprayed it down with some brake cleaner at first to start getting the gunk off. Pulled out some q-tips and paper towels along with a flat head screw driver to get in all the nooks and crannies. Finished it up with some simple green

When i do this again, i would use CARB cleaner instead of brake cleaner as it is less corrosive

    Done!:

Now just re-install and you're done!
    Nice and clean!

I definitely noticed a 2-3 MPG increase after doing this cleaning job
My Brother works a company and they are in the works on making some kinda cleaning tool for this i have to get my truck to them next week to they can test it out ..But ford makes a special tool to remove the egr .

Here's a couple of pics (from the 6.0 tech folder on FTE) that show a very easy way to get that valve out without any special tools.

I cleaned mine today at my brothers work. They make a tool that cleans the egr ports in the manifold . It drives a lot smoother . i will get pics of the tool tomorrow .

Hi. Can anyone explain why this would result in a smoother running engine? I don't get that. Wouldn't the turbo pull all the fresh air it needs from the filter or does it always need the air from the EGR to supplement the fresh?

EGR is admitted directly into the intake manifold, so it's already downstream from the turbo.

The PCM commands a certain amount of EGR based on operating conditions and input from various sensors. Over time the EGR valve can accumulate carbon deposits which can inhibit it's proper performance.

Thanks. So perhaps a frozen EGR is allowing too little or too much exhaust gasses into the intake and that could inhibit performance or otherwise screw with the PCM?

Yep...that and pieces of carbon can keep the valve from closing completely.
