View Full Version : Little Red Truck module test

I went to RBP yesterday to test a couple modules on the red project truck.

First I drove it with no module for comparison purposes. The truck is pretty quick just in stock form. And the exhaust sounds awesome. (no cat, no muffler) The length of the truck and the fact that it's been lowered really changes the handling. It takes a corner much better than a stock truck.

Then I test drove it with a Quad 160 module in it. I pulled out of the parking lot, pointed the truck straight down road, and gave it about 1/4 throttle. Holy Sh!t!!!!! I wasn't prepared for what happened next. The thing went so fast it surprised the crap out of me. It felt like I had it at full throttle rocket boost. The power was instant and insane. And the exhaust sound was incredible. I immediately let off the peddle. Then the engine went to a VERY ROUGH idle. I turned around and went right back to RBP. Rolland had installed this module once before and got the same rough idle. We tried it this time hoping that the first time it had been installed wrong or something.

We yanked the Quad and put on a Predator. This Predator was actually a small box that plugged in to the FICM. I always thought the Predator was a programmer that was downloaded through the OBD-II port. http://www.socaps.comimages/graemlins/shrug.gif Anyhow, the module worked correctly and I drove it around for about 20 minutes on surface streets and the 91 fwy. I was able to hammer it pretty good from a dead stop and while cruising on the fwy. The power isn't as instant or as strong as the Quad, but at least it worked. For those of you have been in my silver F250 with the Edge module, the red truck is quicker with the Predator by quite a bit. There is some shift programming in this module. I didn't have a chance to properly run it through the learning process so it doesn't shift correctly yet. But the tranny will kick down without having to floor it. I didn't notice this when I drove it without a module, so I'm assuming it is the Predator.

The sound of this truck is just incredible. Everybody gives it a double take as you go by them. Especially those people walking down the sidewalk. http://www.socaps.comimages/graemlins/grin.gif

Anyhow, when I got back to RBP after testing the Predator, I did a couple quick tire chirps in the rather large parking lot. It will even spin the tires from about a 10 MPH roll. As I pulled up to the building, three RBP guys were standing out front egging me on to do a donut. I had such a grin on my face at this point it was a no brainer. I proceeded to do 2 or 3 very smoky donuts while they watched. Somehow my grin got bigger. http://www.socaps.comimages/graemlins/grin.gif

Bottom line is that this is the most fun I've had in a truck, and I can't wait to get the propane and nitrous hooked up. Soon there will be a propane tank in the bed, with a nitrous bottle on each side of it. I don't plan on running both at the same time. But it will be nice to have the option of using either one. Plus it will just look cool having all those bottles in the bed. http://www.socaps.comimages/graemlins/rofl.gif

I will definitely bring it to the next meeting. Hopefully the meeting will be at a place with a big parking lot or a blocked off side street where we can do a few donuts or drag races. Forget the dyno runs for now, let's see some real action!

Brian,
The Quad box that RBP installed, was it the same box both times? If it is, let Quad know about the issue with the box and see if it is something that he might be aware of. Maybe send the box back for a reflash and see if that cures the idle problem.

Yep, same box both times. I'm going to contact Quad for help.
