Date: April 30th for those of you that plan to spend the night in a casino.
( The following morning, Sat May 1st. is when we actually start the trip )
Start Time: 8 am
Meeting place: out front of the Riverside casino, in line with the entrance.
We will need to stop for ice & food & drink & fuel on the way to the trail head.

I'm looking around for a map of the trail.
Here's a peek at what it looks like.

http://www.desertusa.com/mag99/nov/stories/photos/mpmap.gif

Do any of you have GPS?
I'll have my I-Phone but doubt I'll get a signal the whole way.

Does any one live near an REI?
Seems they carry this map.
http://www.rei.com/product/777281

We need maps & what ever else you guys might have that tell us about the history of the trail.
Would make the trip more interesting I think..

Its two weeks away from now.

Lets get a current head count.

So far theres Me. :)

Blanco & Wife.(Blanca) 1996 Centurion.

You got any sort of maps or anything to guide us through the unknown?
I've never done the trail & have no idea if its well marked or not?

Hmm, I thought this was going to be on Memorial day weekend. I guess I missed the date change. OK, so I'll put in for a couple of more days of vacation, shouldn't be a problem. Now I better get a room. Oh and I have a GPS. I'll see if I can get the topos for the area loaded.

Do we have any guitar players joining us on this trip?
I have a acoustic bass guitar I'd love to bring along on the trip to play as long as I have a guitar player to follow along with.. :)
I bought it for camping trips yet to this day have never used it on a camping trip.

There are some Google Earth .kmz files of the Mojave Trail here. (http://www.dirtopia.com/wiki/Image:Mojave_Road.kmz)

There is a good expedition report thread on an FJ Cruiser forum here with numerous pictures. (http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/trail-report-photo-section-gps-coordinates/38720-mojave-road-expedition-report.html) I read the thread and it sounds like a fun trip. Here is a .kmz file from that thread. (http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/trail-report-photo-section-gps-coordinates/38720-mojave-road-expedition-report-7.html#post657719)

I opened both of those files in Google Earth and got a pretty good idea of where the trail is.

The National Geographic map that is linked to in the first post here is supposed to be pretty decent from what I have read on other forums.

I Google earthed our meeting place.
The Riveside Casino is the big one at the top of the picture. ( the last one on Casino drive it seems. )
I made a square at the bottom corner of the parking lot where the big rigs park for us to meet at 8 am.

Its gonna be a great time no matter how many show up.
I love the beauty of the desert, & to see all the history along the way will be great.

Are you heading out Friday night?
Or showing up in the morning?
We could meet up & then go party the night before.

2 weeks to go... I feel like a little kid counting down the days to disneyland LOL!!!
Me and the little lady are definitely in! We've got our reservations set at the Aquarius for Friday and plan on arriving there mid day, we'll be leaving the SGV early morning on Friday if anyone wants to caravan. I've got a GPS built into the truck and can have the GF bring her portable Navi if needed.

I've got quite a bit of camping supplies so if anyone needs anything just post up and I'll bring extras. I've got a few propane torches and burners for lighting and can bring the portable stove if we think we'll need it. If we each bring some fire wood with us we should be good with a big bonfire Sat night.

I wouldn't mind having a large cookout that night either, after a day on the trails I think we'll be ready for a real meal.

How about truck prep... Any suggestions? Anyone bringing a 12V compressor? I was going to grab a cheapy from Harbor Freight otherwise. I'll have a decent toolbox with me incase of any breaks and I recommend you bring some tools yourselves.

What did your rooms cost you guys?
I was gonna book mine at the Riverside but its &70.00 for Friday night & wonder if there's cheaper?
I just looked it up in my book & the trail start area is closest to the Avi Casino.
If I remember correctly that's about 15 minutes south of the rest of the Casinos.
Its all by its self on Indian land.
I've stayed there before because it has a boat ramp. :)

I know the AVI has a gas station with you basic stuff.
It nothing like a supermarket that I will wanna get food & drink at.

We have a small gas BBQ & plan to bring at least one bundle of wood.
If each rig brings one bundle of wood, I would think that's enough?
I'm limited on what I can bring being my rigs a 4 door Bronco with no open bed.
We'll just bring our typical stuff we bring for a camp out with us.

Wheres the Aquaqrius & what was the room rate?

& I might be interested in a caravan with you.
I plan to leave Burbank in the mid morning or noon?

Check Kayak.com They are still showing the River Palms at $43 for the night. They have the Avi at $62 for the night... I don't see the Riverside on there though and Tripadvisor has them at $69 across the board...

Our room at the Aquarius was $65 for the night. A couple of the GF's friends stayed there recently and recommended it so we're giving it a try... Its been a while since we took a vacation so the extra $$ are worth it to us...

You can see the location of the Aquarius on the link you posted back in Post#9. Its on casino drive a little North of the River palms.

Its been a while since I've been to Laughlin but IIRC there is a full blown shopping center not too far from the casinos where we can grab all the last minute supplies we need. Honestly I think a large evening BBQ with all the attending members would be great for Sat night, just have each vehicle responsible for one portion of the meal before we head out of laughlin. I've got 2 5gallon gas cans I'll be bringing as backup, Walmart had them on sale for $5 a pop, you may want to grab a couple for the trip if you see fit :)

We were hoping to hit the road by noon ourselves, comming from Burbank you've got at least 45 minutes of driving just to make it to where I am heh. Maybe we could meet up somewhere off the 57 and the 210 if that works for you.

I know Blanco is bringing his Bronco, is anyone else bringing their superduty or am I the only one mucking his through the dirt?? I was looking at some of the pics from the FJ forums and it looks like there will be some interesting obstaclesfor these trucks on the trail, nothing that worries me too much though ;)

i figure we will be there between 5 or 6...im guessing we will talk about what we are planning on grilling when we get to laughlin on friday?

some extra fuel just incase, water, hand tools...

I'm gonna check hotels.com.

I started think about the AVI being that's about where the start of the trail head seems to be closest to.
But since I plan to have some fun in the casinos at night & I don't wanna drink & drive.
I'm gonna stay some where in the collection of casinos for more fun.
Not to mention that theres nothing around the AVI last time I was there & I'd like to buy a bunch of stuff from a supermarket the morning before heading out.
I'll be bringing a few things from my local area but.... stuff like groceries would be better fresh vs of been sitting in my truck for two days.

That's cool assuming we all have the same taste in food?
Whats on the menu for that night?
& who will be responsible for doing the actual cooking?
& who has a BBQ big enough for the number of people that might show up?
I just have a small BBQ big enough for the 2 of us pretty much. ( to cook at one time I mean...)
I'm down for it, but we need to plan something like that out I think? ( we could start planning now, but do we know for sure how many people are gonna be there? )

I've got 2 5gallon gas cans I'll be bringing as backup, Gas?!?!?! I though we were pretty much all PSD's?

We were hoping to hit the road by noon ourselves, comming from Burbank you've got at least 45 minutes of driving just to make it to where I am heh. Maybe we could meet up somewhere off the 57 and the 210 if that works for you. I prefer to go the back way so was thinking anywhere north of Victorville is good for me. :)

I know Blanco is bringing his Bronco, That's my 4 door Bronco! One Ton PSD Centurion F350!

is anyone else bringing their superduty or am I the only one mucking his through the dirt?? I was looking at some of the pics from the FJ forums and it looks like there will be some interesting obstaclesfor these trucks on the trail, nothing that worries me too much though ;)
We just need to bring proper gear , I'm bringing a tow strap & some basic tools.

im down for the caravan!!! my GF took that whole day off as well so mid morning like blanco said and meet in west covina area by noon.
Like I said above I prefer to drive up the 14 fwy & meet the 15 fwy in Victorville.
No traffic & saves on time. :D

i figure we will be there between 5 or 6...im guessing we will talk about what we are planning on grilling when we get to laughlin on friday?
I think we should ask the ladies what they might wanna cook & etc etc... I don't cook much myself, That's the wife's department.
& they should be givien a fair chance to think about it & plan this out.
We can let them register on the site or post under our names if they need to talk about it...?
& who would buy the meat then?
The meat is the expensive part!
Sure I'll bring the chips! LOL!!
Maybe doing our own thing might be better & we could share our BBQ after we cooked up our own food.

some extra fuel just incase, water, hand tools...
Anyone have a winch? or a CB radio?
I'll have my CB, but dont have a winch..
A shovel might be good too if you have one?

According to the guide I'm reading a stock 4x4 with decent ground clearance should be fine.
& we'll have straps & other tools to help the few that get stuck.

Another thing the guide I'm reading says, this is a trail you should plan to at least do once in your life. :D

Gas?!?!?! I though we were pretty much all PSD's?
I could have sworn me and you have been over this before lol… My current truck is a gasser with the 5.4… He’s far from stock though ;)
Don’t get me wrong, I miss my old truck wit the 7.3 (85 regular cab long bed with a 7.3L powerstroke swapped in painted white with metallic blue racing stripes down the middle – taken from me by a driver on her cellphone June 13, 02 – I got to enjoy him for about 2 months after completing his 2 year build…) … I’ll have another someday…

I prefer to go the back way so was thinking anywhere north of Victorville is good for me.
That’s cool with me; you have a specific exit off the 15 in mind?

That's my 4 door Bronco! One Ton PSD Centurion F350!
SWEET!!! Can’t wait to see the beast in person!

im down for the caravan!!! my GF took that whole day off as well so mid morning like blanco said and meet in west covina area by noon.
Since Blanco is comming from burbank, he'll be taking a different route than myself (shorter for him) and meeting up somewhere around Victorville. I see you’re in Simi Valley yourself BFT, it might be better for you to caravan out with Blanco and I’ll bring anyone from my neck of the woods and meet up with you guys in victorville….

Anyone have a winch? or a CB radio?
I'll have my CB, but dont have a winch..
A shovel might be good too if you have one?

& DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERAS!!!!!!

12-15k lb winches are pricey L None here… No CB either…
Shovels I DO have and will plan on bringing at least one to dig a nice bonfire pit. Camera’s are always locked and loaded.

ill bring my grill along, its a small coal burner for the coal roller, lmao!!! ill have a cooler with me and will bring an extra one if need be for storing meats and what not.
Guess I’ll do the same… I do have a large coal grill I can bring if needed but it doesn’t look like it heh.

My Wife thinks every one cooking for them selves is probably better.
We can all share chips & salsa or dip & such though...

I'm getting so excited about this trip..

Sounds good, keeps it simple. Same here buddy, same here!!!

We are all arriving at Lauglin on Friday for partying and drinks although this part has nothing to do with the trail run. The trail run actually starts Saturday morning around 8am I think and will run through Sunday afternoon / evening. We will be camping out on the trail Sat night. You’re welcome to arrive in time for just the trail or come hang out the night before at the casinos. Its 130+ miles of dirt / gravel / desert plants / and some salt (with allot of cool things to see along the way). That link Blanco posted on page one shows the story of a jeep club that ran this same trail back in 07. A bone stock Jeep YJ made it through with stock tires… oh and it was a 2x4 who didn’t air down!!! If you run into trouble we’ll be there to help but I don’t think you’d need it. One note I should make though…. I see your truck is a 08, keep in mind we will be traversing lots of dirt / gravel roads and a couple obstacles along the way. I’m not saying you’re going to maul it but it will see some abuse. Food for thought. That said, you and the wife should come out; I bet its going to be quite an experience. Read the Jeep forum's take on it to give you a better idea.

Dude that's gotta suck!

That’s cool with me; you have a specific exit off the 15 in mind?
Well the 1st one any one coming from my way would be the palmdale rd. exit.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/793264/original/screen-shot-victorville.jpg
The square I marked is behind & to the side of the Ambassador hotel.
This could be a good spot for getting more fuel or muchies for the road or even as a bathroom stop?

The other option is in the middle of no where. just outside Barstow about 30 minutes north of Victorville.
Outlet center drive.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/793265/original/screen-shot-barstow.jpg
This is the entrance to the desert where MDR & others have their desert races.
You make the right & you cant miss the entrance.
You'd probably see a few desert race rigs camped out.
There's nothing else there though, no fuel or bathrooms nothing but an sign showing that your at whatever its called OHV park.

We could do that, But I warn you..... I'm normally a bit behind my schedule. :o

LMAO your bar scene smiley cracked me up!! Specifically the one upside down chugging away... Reminds me of a shirt my cousin has... Written upside down on the back it reads: "If you can read this please help me back up to the bar." hahaha always a winner when he wears it :P

I vote for the Palmdale exit. That way the little bladders can do their thing and the drivers get to take a nice break before the longer drive ahead. Are we talking straight shot to Laughlin from there or should we plan a couple other stops on the way for food / restroom as needed, or... just go with the flow :)

I'm fine with Victorville then, if your heading north on the 15 go over the fwy towards the Ambassador & turn right on the 1st street past the hotel, if you don't see us there drive to the end of the block we might be on the back side of the Hotel.
& as far as the rest of the drive...
I personally like to stop & take a leak from time to time. ( I'm on High Blood pressure med's that make me go a lot. :o )
But I guess it will just depend on how were all feeling.
If we all had CB's talking along the way would be easier, but I guess we'll call each other on the phone as people wanna stop.
Since we'll only have one night to gamble, I'll wanna get there ASAP. :D

& Maybe we should post Pics of our rigs so we know what to look for.

& I just thought of something...
If I'm not working on Thursday, I might just leave on Thursday for one more night of fun.
& then I'll have time to scout out the area for our groceries & stuff.
I figure we'll get fuel at the AVI though....

If I go a day early I'll probably pre-run getting to the trail head.

How much did the cb radio run you guys?
I got mine years ago with an easy move from one rig to another with an ant & an 18' cable.
I think I spend around 100 / 150 bucks?
It has been years since I bought it though.. so I might be off a bit.
Depending on where you live just go up to somewhere like Castiac & hit the truck supply store & they'll hook you up.
At Castiac I prefer Attco to the other options...

I had posted on the other thread that I will not be going on this trip.

I had considered this CB for occasional use. (http://www.amazon.com/MIDLAND-75-822-Channel-Way-Radio/dp/B00000K2YR/) I do not want one permanently installed, especially the antenna. You can use a magnet mount antenna for greater range.

Unidens are good radios..
But you might wanna consider an external speaker.
The one in my Rig has a cool external speaker on its mount & allows me to easily swap it from one rig to another, with a Mag mount ant.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/793480/fullsize/img_8316.jpg

I have a front fire speaker on the CB in my 2 door bronco & cant really here it when I'm driving.
Granted my Bronco is loud inside being it has no carpet & a sheet metal dash etc etc..
That being said, that front speaker should be fine with a full plush factory interior.
Try it & find out before the trip.

Sexy trucks, I WANT that Bronco!

BFT me and you have the same color truck! Did it come like that as a factory option? I didn't know Ford brought that color back!!.. but then again I haven't really paid much attention to it heh.

Mine is an early 99 actualy built in 98. When I looked up my vin it returned a color code not found in any of our superduty directories. I went back to the old f350's from 97 and before and the directory had the same paint code as mine. I later found out of all the first generation superduties, only those built in the first year 99 (but really built in 98) had that color as a factory option!!

I can't for the life of me find my SD card converter to upload my pics! I'll stop by the best buy or something and pick one up today after work... I wonder if they have any CB's...

Unidens are good radios..
But you might wanna consider an external speaker.

Tear into it and set it to run your own external speaker!! Tim Taylor FTMFW!! :peace::peace:

I dont know if radio shack has realistics CB's, If so I would avoid such a thing.

For the Simi Valley guy I would consider driving up to Castiac & getting it all up there.
There's even guy that will mount it & tweak it to get the most out of it up there & it don't cost much.

& the other guy that lives where?
West Covnia or something I would consider hitting that huge truck stop right off the 10 fwy around the Montclair area.

Just some suggestions. :)

Here's a place I've ordered from before to give you some ideas about radios..
Stay away from the 10 meter radios & just get a simple CB.

Actually I would not go to the pilot.
If your heading north on the 5 fwy exit Parker & turn right then left on the 1st main street.
& then about a 1/2 block up there a place on the left called something like Addco or Attco I forget but heres where it is.
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/793665/original/attco.jpg
http://www.supermotors.net/getfile/793667/original/attco-1.jpg

This place is not a truck stop but on the same block.
They sell just about anything a trucker might want.
There's a lot more to chose from than the Pilot..

That's where I've bought all my stuff anyways.
& if they dont have it then, the pilot is next. but you'll see they dont have too much to chose from.

Hey Steve, are you joining us on the Mojave trip?

3 foot? where you gonna mount it?
Seems I'm told that it should stick up higher the better.
On my 2 door Bronco I mounted it on the back bumper & it don't stick up much higher than the shell, & it works ok.
But my Mag mount I put on top of the cab of my 4 Door Bronco seems to work better.
But that could actually be a lot of factors in play.
Did you get the white plastic insolator for the ant?
so its not grounded to what ever you mount it too?
Or did you get one with a certain type of mount?

The basic truckers Channel you'll wanna be listening to on the way to laughlin will be chnl 19.
That's where all the truck drivers warn each other about where the Bears ( hwy patrol ) are hiding & working the hwy.

If you ever go driving up over the grape vine everybody switches to 15 for some reason I've never heard.....
But over most of the country it 19..

I typically hang out on chnl 4 when off roading & waiting for friends I go out with.
Chnl 4 for 4 wheeling. :D
So in other words on Sat morning I'll be on chnl 4 while waiting for you guys in the parking lot.
Then again, I tend to fall behind & you might be waiting for me.

Total Travel Estimate: 5 hours 18 minutes / 335.31 miles Fuel Cost: $70.61 at 14 MPG
I could probably take Friday off but I know my wife couldnt......And even then depending on where we stop sunday having a 5-6 hour drive home then going to work monday at 0630 would kick both our asses. I will have to talk it over with her but at this point I think I am going to bow out. I would really love to make this Desert Trip but it just dont seem practical at this point.

Sure, the drive to Laughlin is like going to Vegas.. it is Nevada after all.
You could show up Sat. morning & join us as we're heading out then the 1st day we're gonna drive about 1/2 way home via the historic dirt trail.
Then find a cool place to camp out over night & then start back up in the morning. ( each day should be about 60 miles of driving in the dirt ) & then end up in Barstow mid after noon the way I figure it.
I figure I'll be back home in Burbank before dark on Sunday.

!st off the trail is not hard core so I don't think that's an issue..
But yeah thats always a good idea.
I wont air down much because I don't have OBA on this rig & so I'll be going a long way before being able to air up.

I'd just bring your basic camping & trail gear & call it good.
you'll only be camping for one night.
If you have tools & straps & etc & fire wood & food & Booze etc etc... bring it.
I personally don't know how often I'll get this chance & will be loving every minute of this trip. :D

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm leaving sometime tomorrow morning (thursday) & I'll Pre-run everything out for us.
I'll find the markets & the trail head & etc etc..
Let me know if you need me to find anything special for you.

I might bring my desert laptop..
But if not I will be on line via my I-Phone....

I can grab a cheapy at HF tonight if need be (decent reviews for the price) but I think we'll be fine for the most part.

It might be a good idea to post up anything you may need so someone else can bring extras if they have them. I personally have no straps for this rig, tore my last one up pretty bad, and I haven't had the chance or need to replace it :P I will be bringing extra JD just incase though!!

In case I missed anyone, the caravan is meeting up off the Foothill Blvd exit in San Dimas off the 210 Fwy (2 exits after the 57 if you're heading east on the 210) at 11 am Friday morning. No..... actually I'll see how the trail goes then if need be air down.

I can grab a cheapy at HF tonight if need be (decent reviews for the price) but I think we'll be fine for the most part.[/always a good thing to have I suppose..
It might be a good idea to post up anything you may need so someone else can bring extras if they have them. I personally have no straps for this rig, tore my last one up pretty bad, and I haven't had the chance or need to replace it :P I will be bringing extra JD just incase though!!
I'm bringing a strap & some basic tools.
I'm assuming the JD is Jack Daniels? [img]http://www.thewebwheeler.com/forums/images/smilies/13_4_10.gif[img]

In case I missed anyone, the caravan is meeting up off the Foothill Blvd exit in San Dimas off the 210 Fwy (2 exits after the 57 if you're heading east on the 210) at 11 am Friday morning. If you want to join in on the caravan please PM me ASAP. We don't plan on lingering so don't take the chance and miss the train ;)
No more Victorville?

Well , after I hit the submit button I'm heading out Laughlin bound. :yay:

The tires call for 55 PSI max but their load rating is so high they ride rough at that pressure. I've found 35 on the pavement is just right for the ride. These militaries wear like steel anyways, they never get hot!!

I'll try and stop by tonight and grab a compressor but there's a birthday party I'm supposed to be attending later this evening. Gotta hit the skinny pedal hard to make it to HF and back in time... Otherwise I could just head out a lil early and pick it up on the way to the caravan tomorrow morn.

I just checked into my room! :D
I found the entrance to the trail off the hwy about 15 minutes south from my hotel/casino.
& learned that the AVI market at the gas station sells lots of fireworks!
I only bought a few dollars worth not much just for the fun of it.
They're so cheap!
The also sell booze & beer & have your basic mini mart stuff.
Plus if your a smoker the sell cartons pretty cheap.
Tomorrow I'll find the grocery store & etc....

Man I am still so on the fence about this. Blanco I will keep in contact on wether to look for me or not. And is the trailhead on 95? Would I need to go all the way into Laughlin? Or could we meet at the gas station on the 95 and the turn off to Laughlin?

It's also possible that the mojave river through afton canyon could be flowing pretty good to. Just thought I'd throw that out.

No! The trail head is Off needles hwy!
& no you don't have to drive the extra 15 minutes into lauhlin.
you can meet us at the AVI casino gas station mini mart That sells masive fire woke & booze & ice etc etc.

We will be there between 8:30 & 9am getting ice & stuff for the trail.
The trail head is 3 miles from there & that's the last chance for fuel.

Anyone wanting to join us last minute please call me so we can wait for you.
