    Truck will not start.

2001 7.3 has been running and in the mornings misses until it warms up, then it runs fine. This morning it fired up and no problems. Just tried to start it and it just turns over but will not try to start. Ran the codes and have these two codes (P1316 has been there for a couple of weeks and the new one today is P0603) The engine service light comes on and if the truck is driven for a couple of hours will at times go out. The Tachometer does not move when I try to start it. I just changed the CPS today when it did not start, no help. Can someone help.

Might want to look into the glow pluge and the relay for them. That is where I would start.

Where is the relay located. With the problem normally in the mornings, that may be the problem. In the middle of the day (today) if the truck has not been started in 5+ hours, would it not start at all if the glows plugs don't heat? I thought I read that after starting and running in the morning the glow plugs were not needed as much during the day. How do I test the relay?

    Re: Truck will not start.

I need to try to fix it on Saturday, need to haul my TT to Fillmore Sunday PM for a 2 week Supervision Job. Any help is greatly appreciated. If anyone has ideas on Saturday I will be on my cell phone. I will try to locate the relay in the morning. I don't know a good diesel mechanic down here and the truck is dead in Chula Vista. Re: Truck will not start.

I very much doubt the starting problem is the glow plugs or "relay".

In warm weather like this the truck should start without glow plugs!

And, I don't think you have a glow plug relay. I think California PSD's have an electronic circuit in place of the relay. (This may only apply to the newer years...I'm not sure.)

I'd look elsewhere for the starting problem.
Quick thought...is you engine oil full? Injectors won't fire unless the engine has oil in it. Or maybe your high pressure oil pump is giving out?

I don't know what the above engine error codes are you listed, but it would make sense to see what they are before we guess anymore!!

I have a relay on mine. Not sure it applies to being new. But go to your nearest NAPA dealer. For a relay.

    Re: Truck will not start.

Ok I have been pulling my hair out here and this is what I have so far...99.5 7.3, I have put a new GPR-110, and my truck still fails to start in the morning. (about 45d) I just did this check and here are my numbers. On the GPR, I had 13 volts on the passenger side post(large) 0 on opposite with the key off.
With the key in the on position I had 10.3V on the drivers side post(large), when the wait to start light goes outafter about 6-8 seconds, voltage rised to 10.9V. After 3 cycles truck started.
The voltage went up to 11.6V and rises with throttle, to about 12.6V.after about 30 seconds to a minute, voltage dropped to 0 volts.
I then shut off the truck and tried again. After 6 cycles truck failed to start and not enough battery to crank over. (duals)
Don't know where to go from here, cept dealer and that is last resort only.
I got no replies to this. I got the answer at TDS. Feel free to pm me and I'll go look up my post there... ...Oh Make sure both your batteries have max voltage prior to starting. In my case it was weak batteries.

Thanks, I looked for your thread here last night and did not find anything. I'll look at TDS. I'm trying the search and hope to find something.
    Thanks again

    Re: Truck will not start.

I found your thread on TDS and I think my problem is different. The truck has at times ran with an erratic miss in the mornings. I will have it missing and then it will smooth out and then start missing again or just run fine. I made a trip to Fillmore on Thursday with no problems and my mileage was 18.4 so it isn't effecting my mileage. I'll go down where the truck is (at work) and keep looking. I found a mobile diesel mechanic (??????????) maybe he can help. I depend on my PSD, don't like driving our other cars. I will have my cell phone and my office computer to this website if anyone has other ideas. Thanks everyone, I still don't know enough about the way it works, just like the results of the PSD.

    Re: Truck will not start.

The battery was the problem. One good battery must have been the one that turns the starter and always started right up, never thought about the other battery handling the electronics. Makes sense now, once it started each day and charged up enough to run smooth no more problems. Thanks for everyones suggestions, they were all great ideas but the batteries were the solution.

    Re: Truck will not start.

I got a P0603 from disconnecting the batteries on my 04.
Not sure if that helps you.
    Could be a bad battery?

When one of my batteries went bad, the truck ran pretty bad and had trouble starting (even warm)
